I need a famous HHO kick up the bum! I'm going to go for my Stage 1 exam, and can't decide whether to go for the 15th Jan or 28th Feb. Had a lesson at a 'where to train' centre, and my instructor is happy for me to go for it. I'm also working through the book, but need to do this properly and make notes.

Do I go for the earlier one or the later one? Not sure whether to just go for it, but don't want to waste money by failing it  The two centres are Oaklands College (Herts) and Newton Hall (Suffolk), so if anyone has any experience of these, I'd welcome any tips, and also what to expect?!

Gen up well with the book, get a mock or more training under your belt and no reason not to go for the early one if an instructor who's actually seen you says you're good to go :)

You'll be fine - just know your stuff, take a breath and think before answering and smile - it'll help you relax. They won't eat you alive ;)

I done my mine at Newton Hall just last month and they were quite nice there. :)

Also, I have been to Oaklands college a few times for a competition and the whole place is really nice. The horses were quite nice too. :D

I did my stage 1 at Newton hall last month and Rossie Theobald is lovely, the horses are nice and the facilities are good. I will definitely going there to do my stage 2. Do ring up * ask them to do a exam prep training day. I went on one of these beforehand and it was great as you basically did a mock exam, but you had a chance to sit on some of the horses, do some stable management * familiarise your self with the place before the exam. I am so glad I did one of these as I then felt much more confident on the actual exam day.

Right - I've booked the 15th Jan one, may as well get it out of the way so I can work on Stage 2. Bought the DVD as well and now happier about doing it as it does seem quite basic. Will book a few more lessons at my local, and will also arrange some kind of visit to Oaklands before the big day - excited now! Just need to practice things I'm not used to doing, such as:

Adjusting stirrups whilst feet in stirrups (I normally quit)
Tail bandaging
Put rug on / taking off in that weird folding manner they like
Light seat
Rules of feeding / watering
Got a friendly local instructor showing me her jars of straights as I'm not familiar with them having grown up with compound mixes.
