Ok so as I'm a big lover of all the gear and no idea :o, my current skull cap smells and could probably do with being replaced...

I've currently got a gatehouse and I do like it so will look at them again, but what do you lovely lot use and recommend?
 
Ooo now that looks promising and doesn't break the bank! Did think I should probably put a price bracket on as some HHO shoppers have more expensive tastes than me :D.
 
Winning on price but it doesn't have the removable lining...

Have a CO hat as my dressage hat so I do tend to like them and they tend to fit, so another to go and try, thank you :).
 
I'm always taken aback by hat prices, considering you are supposed to replace them when you fall off.

Are there actually any up to standard skull caps under the £100 mark??
 
I have a HS1 but tried on a friends CO 4 star and think I might like it more. I always used to get head aches from the front my only COs but the 4star eliminates that pressure.

:D Not aware that I have squint head but if I try one on that goes squint I'll let you know :D.

Any particular UVEX? Have to say they're not my fave to look at in general but happy to add to the list to try.

I do agree with you, when people start spending over the £200 mark I do start to raise my eyebrows a bit, their money and all that but maybe I fall off too much to consider that an acceptable price :D. My range was up to the £150 mark and to the now accepted standards list. Will let you know if I find any bargains which meet the standards.

Another tick for the 4 star, will try and get to somewhere which stocks them :). Have to say my gatehouse (no idea what style it is) has been super comfy but it's one without vents so sweaty head is enevitable!

I got the Champion Deluxe with Leather Harness for around £93.00 and it is a really hat.
 
Another vote for the CO 4star or CO J3 from me :). Current XC hat is a J3 but I really liked the last 4star I had.

I need a new competition hat (SJ and DR) and am currently eyeing up the Samshields but I'm not sure if they'll make my massive head look even bigger!

Looking good for the CO range then :D.

I have the Charles Owen Sparkly YR8 Riding Hat for DR (and the odd spot of SJ) and love it, lightweight and flattering profile but admittedly the glitter isn't for everyone :o, and I would prefer a leather harness...
 
I love my uvex but it does sit squint (aforementioned squint head!) and it's no longer acceptable standard for competing that's why I need another one.

Incidentally personally I would only replace if I hit my head or dropped it etc, which I've never done in any fall I've had (all on video so I know for sure I am right!).

I tend to go with that as well but my hat must be a fair few years old now and subjected to the normal wear and tear, so I would think the protective shock absoption layer would have started to degrade by now anyway, and it really does smell :o. Will spray some hat deodourant in it and see if that helps whilst I look for a replacement.
 
I have the UVEX exxential which is no longer up to standard but I use it at home as got sick of a) having a hot head and b) replacing £120 hats! The UVEX was £60 including postage from Amazon. I use the CO pro 2 for competitions as they are cheaper than some of the other COs but I still find it really comfy and it's up to spec.

Yes I was more meaning the people who were saying it gets expensive replacing after falls if the hat is relatively new.

That's the thing I like best about the uvex it has removable liners which survive the washing machine. I had a gatehouse one with removable liners previous which did not :o.

Ok will have a look and see if UVEX have brought a new one out for the new standrads yet, cheap and ventilated wins for me :D.

Ah yes I get you now, I don't replace immediately after easy falls either :o. Hmm would want liners that could survive the washing machine!
 
Cheap you say? Up to standard you say? Do you have a small (ish) head? If so the Champion pro plus skullcap can be found for under £40. Designed for kids but very serviceable skullcap. No vents though :(

I'm looking at CO vented hats at the minute as sweaty head is annoying and it's coming up to 5 years old so will need replacing by the end of the year.

Well normally around the 56cm mark but have been smaller, will go have a nosy but think I might be happy to spend a little more for vents!
 
I have a champion vent air and love it.

If I was buying now I'd also consider the Co 4 star though I don't normally have a Co shaped head

I bought another Champion Pro Plus to replace the first which was smashed in a fall. Champion told me they were going to introduce a vented skull. I wonder if this is it?

Yep - they put strips in anywhere they're needed to even it up, and can sort of shave the strips in specific places to make them thinner there too :-) Tried one at Badders and was impressed...

ETA can you believe they aren't at any Scottish shows and only have one stockist in Scotland on their site. Have emailed them to ask about squint heads!!
