Sorry this isn't really horsey but thankyou for your good wishes on Thurs for my interview, but I'm afraid they didn't work

I have been at the library for 14 yrs and the manager for 7 and I feel like I have been firmly slapped in the face

I can now apply for a job in the next round of the restructuring, but even if I manage to get one it will mean a demotion, I just feel so bad I've always worked hard and tried my best and no-one has ever complained, but obviously I just wasn't up to standard

Trish I'm sorry you didn't get the job you wanted - these council restructuring 'efforts' sound a nightmare!

Unfortunately hard work, dedication & loyalty count for nothing these days. My daughters college(she was nursery nurse) had the same thing. People who had worked for 20 years had to apply for their jobs and did not get them. Those in charge of all this dont realise how they affect peoples lives, I was in same job for 17 years and was treated like a piece of crap. Hope you find something else
 
This will be local government, won't it? and you'll know yourself that this sort of thing is all down to internal politics, rather than anything to do with merit. One council dept. office where I was working had a policy of never employing tried & tested people in a post, even though they'd been doing the work for months or years as an interim measure after the original postholder left. Instead, Management / Personnel used the vacancy to attract "new blood" and seemed to feel that the higher calibre post would attract better candidates than the lower post; so they could afford to keep the good person they had already in the lower post; never considered how this person might feel, especially as the existing, sidelined employee then had to teach the incomer his / her job.

Don't be too upset- remember there's life outside this sort of organisation, & go and apply for a few other jobs, even if they stretch your comfort zone a bit; it really wakes up your bosses when you announce- "I won't be in on Tuesday; I've got an interview".

but you know the old saying: when one door closes another one opens. positive thinking! (hmmm-wasn't that a song Morcambe and Wise performed once?). anyway, best of luck for the future.

I'm sorry you didn't get the job. I've been in your position and its scary (although I didn't even bother applying for my job as my boss and I loathed each other and she wouldn't have employed me if I'd been the last person on earth!).
However, these things often happen for the best and there will be a job for you somewhere which you will enjoy. Just take time to work out what you are looking for.
I ended up taking a lower paid job, but I love the work. It meant moving my horse to DIY and making some sacrifices, but I've never regretted it and he doesn't seem to mind that he doesn't get as many new rugs as he used to.
There are lots of options and you will work things out.
 
I hate to say it but work as HR manager and lot of the time these things are predetermined...no matter how good you are. Local government sucks, I left it over 20 years ago...private sector is often fairer oddly enough!
 
Don't give up - keep applying for jobs & the right one will come along.

My o/h is an IT manager with the council & they seem to reorg/restructure every 2 mins just for the sake of it. Lots of politics & none of it's in the slightest bit relevant to how good you are at your job.

Hope you find something better. Most people seem to when they've been made redundant. I know it's hard now, but sometimes a good shakeup turns out for the best in the long run. Lots of people on here told me so when I got made redundant almost exactly a year ago & I didn't believe them... but it's true.

Having worked for both in recent years, I have to say I found the private sector far worse for favouritism, breaches of employment law and constant pointless restructuring.

Local government has issues because of not being able to plan effectively as they never know who will be in power and what their priorities will be.
I think they do sometimes fall foul of trying too hard to "do the right thing" and don't see the bigger picture but I found far greater faults when I worked for the private sector.

Sorry to hi-jack the post briefly. Unfortunately this situation is a fact of life in today's workplace and I don't believe the public sector handles it any worse than the private sector. It is very unpleasant for all concerned, and I really do with Trish all the best. I know there will be a job out there for you.
 
Keep your chin up, at least you have your lovely boy to go and be with and pour your heart out to!

Something else much more exciting will happen to you. Have faith.
