Okay a challenge for us all on here! I hope we can turn this into a discussion thread as well.

I want you to share with us a piece of footage which you think is particularly bad- could be of a top trainer etc- demonstrating what you think is bad horsemanship. Then, I want you to post another piece of footage- it could be another trainer or even better, yourself trying to train the same/something similar and whether you think it's better or whether you are pleased with the desired result and how you got there or what you would change.

I set myself this challenge; I used a video of a professional BHS instructor and then me training one of my horses; I think I did the better job because not only did I get my desired result more efficiently, I believe my horse is more relaxed, in terms of environment and mental state! More over, I think the professional's video fails to show or demonstrate any application of praise. The horse *does* get the odd hard pat, but I'd rather give them a scratch or as I clicker train, a treat. The horse gets punished for not doing the right thing, but doesn't get praised for doing the right thing either.

So yeah, over to you :)

In your video, I love how the horses head just whips round when she hears the click! near the end! :D

She also seemed nice and calm.

:)

Hehe thanks! That was all in a 15 minute training session! She doesn't like the noise, and wouldn't let it near her (as you can see!), so I was pleased with the end eresult. Wanted to do a little more today, but heavy rain etc was not very pleasant, didn't think she was in the mood for working either. Although we worked on worming today with the clicker (well I gave her a treat, as I wormed her- opened mouth and no hassle). So no rearing today! :D :D

I'm going to do 2 videos of Al and Reg because picking other people's seems to be a bit unnecessary IMO. It could be someone picking one of yours which would hurt people. The second video is lovely!

He did this whenever he was pushed at all- not malicious, and worse when the wind was up his bottom a bit. He just objected because it was hard and he didn't fancy it.

Same horse and rider, 6 months on. He is now a fab all round superstar, getting fab dressage marks and generally being a total dude.

If you hear the instructor shouting things which sound a little harsh (boot it, pop it, etc) it's because Al is a bit wet with her legs, so needs slightly more exuberant instructions! Amazing instructor though, the improvement is all down to her amazing help.

Have to say I think she misses loads of "tries" from the horse. He offered to stand still on loads of occasions but she carried on spraying regardless. Would have got a better result, quicker and used less spray if she had been watching him more closely.

Not sure how good hairspray or wd40 is for his airways or skin either

You were not doing it right:rolleyes: No saddle on no bridle and in a field:eek:
Wheres your round pen ?
Tomorrow? lunging with plastic on tail really scare her!

Hehe that made me giggle! I don't get why she tacked them up haha!

I am at a yard where I now have a school and stable, but am so used to having to work in my field for the past 2 years with my horses, that it's a bit of a shock to the system ;)!!!

She always had them tacked up I can understand a bridle but she had a saddle on the poor pony with the plastic on its tail.I just didnt get what she was doing.
I like the look of your youngster.

Oh the plastic bag vid is horrendous. I may do some de-spooking with that when the weather decides to brighten up and I can film!

Thank you! I love both my babies! I have a piebald and a skewbald- very proud of them both!

I feel the pressure applied using the halter in this clip is excessive. Giving the impression that the horse loaded as he saw it as the lesser of two evils!!

Better, longer lasting results are, I believe, obtained by breaking training down into small chunks and working with the horse, to help it look on the handler as an effective and trustworthy leader

That first video is AWFUL! I personally don't like the use of pressure halters (especially thin rope ones), to try and get a horse to load, giving him no choice BUT to load. Yuck.

Can't get your vid to work :(
