thought id say hello , im from northumberland and have 1 horse who im starting BE90 on this weekend ,this is not only my 1st post on here but never used a forum before so a complete newby lol .
I heard something today that made me feel sick , a friend of a friend made the dicision to get her horse PTS earlier in the week and began ringing around to get someone to come out to the yard , one of the places she rang wanted to come out and remove the shoes (fair enough) but he also wanted to take the horses teeth out before he would take him away (alive) i dont know what conditions he was planing on traveling him in .
The local hunt came this morning and the girl is very upset so my friend is going to wait till mon before she rings her and gets more imfo .
I am intending on ringing WHW or BHS when i have more to go on.
I was wanting to know if anyone has heard about this sort of thing happening in this country and were is the best place to ring (RSPCA waste of time ? )

WHO? A hunt? Knackerman? Was the horse being taken away to be put to sleep?

Why did they want to remove his teeth while he was alive? (God forbid!)

hi yes horse was being taken to be PTS i assume it was a knackerman , all i know at the min is she rang them they said yes we can collect it tomorrow but will have to remove shoes and take his teeth out before they loaded him , so yes remove them when he was still alive and thinking he would be taken for meat id assume no drugs.
i could not bellive what i was hearing
dont worry she did not get them to come, the horse was PTS this morning with all his teeth intact by the local hunt thank god
sorry i didnt make sence

yes i herd it right , i nearly fell off the seat i was sat on , it sounded like he was picking more horses up and didnt want him biting any of the others so god knows how he is traveling them.
I will get more info on mon as my friend is reluctant to ring the girl today and ive only met her once so dont have a phone no or anything for her .

I always thought they did it there and loaded/winched the horse after it was PTS? So maybe they meant teeth removed once it was PTS and then loaded up? Teeth don't burn do they, so maybe something to do with this? I have no idea lol!

I'm not saying I've ever heard of it being done by any means!!! New one to me...just trying to make sense of it lol. I'd find out more details before reporting, as it may have been a mishear? Either way...sounds v.odd!

Can you ring them up and enquire to find out what they do exactly?

I have just rang my friend and she has rang the girl and shes not answering her phone understandably , im not going to ring anyone untill i have the phone no and name of this person she rang.
i know i prob sound like a nutter but i am a RC horse welfare advisor (witch means nothing really lol ) and really want to get to the bottom of this.

Never heard of anything like this!!!
It takes a good 2/3 hours to extract one healthy tooth...and I am pretty sure no horse would let you do this live and unsedated...in which case only the vet could give sedation = vet not letting this happen surely!!

Same here! I can't imagine how you could do this even if you wanted to, or why anyone would think it was easier or better to do it before the horse was PTS.

Why did she have the vet pts the horse? they have someone take the body away instead?

Sounds aawful, never heard of a place that did that.

I'd find out the number of the 'person' that said he needed to take the teeth out and report him to the RSPCA - that is a totally disgusting thing to do

I would never have anyone but the vet pts any of mine

If he didn't want the horse to bite any of the other horses whilst transporting (to where??), surely it would be easier to put a muzzle on it then subtract all its teeth!!

Well I've never heard of anything like this!!! My only guess is that your friend would have been in quite a state making the phone call so may not have understood exactly what was being said???? Definately find out for sure that this was what the person wanted to do before phoning and reporting it.

good god!
taking a horses teeth out so it wont bite others during travel?! where is he travelling it to?europe?!
what a horrid thing. definately check if its true and report- its damn cruel!

Well we've had horses pts by vets, different knackermen and hunts and none of them have ever wanted to take teeth out first! Although all ours have been pts at home and then removed afterwards. IME knackers etc don't collect live animals but would expect the owner to arrange transport to their premises if horse was to be pts there.
I'm sure the girl involved must have misunderstood.

I am almost certain that this is a misunderstanding and not helped by the game of chinese whispers of 'hearing it from a friend who heard from a friend'

It would make no sense to do this, and even less sense to tell someone you were going to do it to their horse. Obviously hardly anyone would say ok to that happening and the knackerman would not get the horse. Also they are normally pts at home and winched onto the lorry. It's not going to be biting anything in that state.

I wouldn't get worked up about it, am sure there is nothing to report.
