I am wondering if anyone could give me a few tips on recall training a 6 month old pup? We think he's a beagle, perhaps a cross as already he is 18inches and growing fast XD But while he is progressing well with every other aspect of training and even loves training as a Trail dog along side a bike recall off lead is a problem.

He never was a dog who would come when called, and I do believe because he has habit of running off with things he shouldn't his previous owner has shouted come here and then scolded him or hit him as he has a fear of brushes as well. I have managed to get thing from him by using a toy and doiing a swap but he wont come when called. And he adores being off lead, he's very good at staying close and sticking to the path but i want him to come when called should he get sidetracked and go off the path, or when a collie appears. he has been attacked several times with me and in the past by farming collies.

he isn't a food motivated dog once out of the yard no matter what I use and since he has a food intolerance to chicken and beef cheese and pork sausages were my go to treat but once out of the yard he turns his nose up and the same with toys.
And a whistle or any noise he just goes deaf too.

Would using a lead line work? Or would it re-inforce the fear he has of being dragged back where he doesn't want to go? When he does come back to me in the house or yard I make a big fuss over him and play tug etc but outside the yard again still that stubbornness I guess you could call it.

He is my first dog of my own and I've had a passion for hounds which is why I wanted him. I wanted a dog that would go forever, instead I got a lazy ass pup and our training has been hindered with multiple health issues and vet trips in the past 2 months I have had him.

But any help would be greatly appreciated.

He isn't a beagle - fell hound or a cross perhaps?
That would explain a lot of his behavour.#
What is his history & why the vet trips?
Is his hearing ok?

Long lines are a safety net and you need a solid recall or a solid down on command before letting off lead anywhere but a knwn safe place but he is only a baby.

I've had everything from dachshund to greatdane thrown at me O.o Never heard off a fell hound before.
We know very little about his history a lot is just guess work on his behavior ad response to things. I rescues him off a woman about 2 hours from me who had him a week and decided she didn't want him anymore, she said he was almost 13 weeks and had gotten him from a breeder in Dublin.
I asked for the breeders details should I need to contact him and she said she'd get them to me the next day. I thought fair enough, but she never did and number changed etc he was chipped when I got him, she gave me a number but it wasn't for his chip and after several calls to chip companies, checking with police and rescues we went ahead and put my details to his chip. We had been worried he had been stolen but we were given the go ahead as no pup matching his description of image had been reported lost/stolen and were told we had done all we were able and if I wanted to go ahead and license him as mine.

Im glad I took him, the previous owner had left him outside from 8am until 10pm at night and then into a crate, there was little interaction for him and fed scraps from her plate thrown into the yard.

Vet trips were for Kennel cough, I was told he had had his vaccinations but i went ahead and had them re-done. He had the runs for 2 months, which after a vet trip we discovered was a food intolerance to chicken and beef including by products. We had wondered why he seemed very laid back and wasn't much of an eater.
And just the other day a rush to the vet's for passing blood, which he is now on more antibiotics for a parasite infection.

Oh his hearing his fine, he just has no interest in it. despite living in the country we are in a small group of houses and there are always loud unknown noises going on which I think may have desensitized him to new noises.

His sit and down is great and we have a good sealed in field accesses by a gate that I can let him off in,it's used to be used for the children to play in but now they dont go there and the neighbors use it for their dogs.

Well how I train recall is with another dog that will recall 100%. Have you tired this? Mind you if the poor thing has been in a crate and tied up most of his life he is bound to be nosy at whats going on.

Run away from him when you want him to come back to you - preferably making all sorts of strange noises! Always works with tricky dogs - they think you're leaving without them and most will usually come back.

There is an excellent book called Total Recall by Pippa Mattinson http://www.amazon.co.uk/Total-Recal...1-spell&keywords=total+reacll+pippa+mattinson

I can also recommend this book. Until you have recall, a 10 metre training line or/and a fenced area so he cannot practice ignoring you. The rest of the time, teach him to walk on a loose lead, train sits, downs, stays. Or make him search for treats or toys you have hidden. You need to bombard him with things to keep his attention on you. Running aimlessly following his nose is reinforcing his conviction you are not important enough to be listened to. He can have downtime when he is in the house and garden, not in the great outdoors. All the hunting/sporting breeds need massive amounts of training to keep under control. Not just for a few weeks in a training class but for most of their lives.
