My 7yr old horse is on box rest and during the day to allow him to get some fresh air i put him in a small concrete run. When his finished his hay i've noticed him eating his own dried droppings...
Does anybody know why he is doing this and what i could do to stop him?

Any help most welcome x

It could be he is lacking flora in his stomach or that he is bored/hungry.

We had one that did this after a spell at Equine Hospital and she still does it from time to time, we give her probiotics just to help her stomach although if she isn't hungry she doesnt do it - she is an eat until all gone type

Hi there my horse lived out in the summer and began to do this. When he was back in his stable he went straight for the salt lick. Once he had had a good old lick he never touched his droppings again! so i would make sure he has a salt lick at all times. The hymalian (sorry about spelling) are the best to have.

Have you wormed him with Pramox recently? I used this on my three boys 12 weeks ago - a 6 year old stallion, a 7 year old gelding and a yearling gelding. I noticed (and was horrified) when the stallion dropped one and turned straight round and was eating it! I quickly shovelled it up. It definitely isn't boredom.
Then I noticed that the 7 year old was eating the yearlings droppings as soon as he had done them! I got them on pink powders quickly, and shovel twice a day! They all have access to Rockies Red salt blocks. Also, it may be coincidence but the stallion started shedding hair like mad and non stop so that he had obvious pink patches on his neck - both sides. He is an appaloosa and has since been wearing a fly-sheet complete with neck and full face mask (ears, eyes and nose covered). I gave them all extra biotin to help with the coats, and it seems to have helped as nice covering on the neck again, and good feet on all of them.

Thank you all for your help. I brought him a ball that releases nuts to help with bordem and he has a salt lick that he loves! He no longer eats his own droppings so big thanks from me xxx
