Hi Fi Lite

I was under the impression from my feed merchant that Hi Fi Lite contains no molasses or anything. But TBH I find it sticky, and have since heard it isnt as 'pure' as I was told.

Can anyone recommend anything which is just a basic chaff? Nothing added, nothing taken away.

Also, once opened, how long does a bag of chaff last in a bin? It takes us AGES to get through a bag (a handful a day), and I worry about it going off.

It cointains extracts of mollasses (whatever that is

). Have looked high and low for a totally unmollassed chaff (am still looking
frown.gif
, so if you find some let me know). I have a sugar intollerant mare, so now use Alfa A Oil (which is of course much higher in protein than plain chaff). I have found that Hi Fi Lite lasts ages as long as it is kept dry and cool (did have some go mouldy once in the summer, but think it may have got damp as use to store my carrot is same bin).

unless you chop the stuff yourself you will be very hard pushed to find a completley unmollassed chaff, the reason for this is that the product would be very dusty so a covering of mollasses keeps any dust to a minimum as well as making the stuff palatable, unless you have a horse that is PROVEN sugar intolerant then i would have no qualms about using hi-fi lite, after all it is designed for laminitics.

Katy, think you're starting to get too obsessive about this now

I feed Hifi Lite to the Jellymonster...it's 3.5% sugar I think(don't quote me on that though) so VERY low,and it's certainly OK for ponies who either suffer from,or could be at risk from, Laminitis.
I'm actually swapping Jells onto HiFi Senior as she finds the Lite so boring*big SWUO yawn*
wink.gif

As for how long it lasts.....well,Jells had 2 handfuls a day in her 'feed' and it's certainly not gone off in anyway since I first bought it.

Hope that helps

Have you tried Hi Fi Good doer - Like Hi Fi Lite, but with added herbs (smells minty), thus tastier (apparently!!) and less boring.

I have 1 laminitic so I used to feed Hifi lite but like you found it sticky with lots of hard lumps of chop. I then moved onto Spillers Happy Hoof. Its great and the laminitic love it. I know feed it to all of my horses.
1 bag normally lasts me 2 weeks, but i use approx 4 scoops a day.

Good-doer contains molasses too,and probably has a similar sugar content to the Senior, which is 8%(spoke to the Dengie people on friday).
Have got the senior on order,so will see how it goes. Plus it's softer than the Lite, and as SWUO struggles due to her teeth thought it might make it abit easier for her to digest properly.

Are you sure? Thought it contained 'extracts of mollasses', same as the Hi Fi Lite (rather than mollasses like normal Hi Fi).

Think Senior is easier to chew though, as believe it contains dried timothy grass (but you probably know that already if you have spoken to Dengie). Hope SWUO likes it.

I too have spoken to spillers.

Hi Fi lite, 3.5 - 4% sugar

Good doer approx twice this and happy hoof is 4 - 4.5%

Tracitional chaffs have up to 40% molasses.

The only one I know of with no added sugar is lucie stalks by simple system, however they are highr in naturally occurring sugars at 11%

Hi! I feed it to my laminitic and find it ok, mind you he would eat anything. Seems to last for weeks. I add a wee handful of safe ans Sound as it does look a bit boring, to a greedy cob its nectar!

My old pony was laminitic and he was fed on hifi lite, it is VERY low in sugar and I doubt you will find a feed which contains no suger at all unless you make it yourself.
I find that lasts ages, so do not worry about it going off over a short period of time.

The old horse i ride is also sugar intolerant...he is fed a diet of Hi fi Senior, veteran mix, and now grass nuts..(well, he's getting on a bit & his teeth aren't what they used to be..)

can't have sugar beet at all...not even speedi-beet! not that he needs it as he's fat as anything!!

i think there is a small amount of mollasses in the senior stuff..but it's not much and might suit your horse, if you're having probs with the hi fi lite?

I use lucie stalks from simple systems - no sugar or molasses added.

Only problem is they sell direct so you would have to buy a fair bit - but if you wanted to try their total eclipse supplement etc then it would be worth a go.

Personally I love SS feeds and my boys have never looked better.

I use Hi Fi Lite with no problems on my native fatty. Mind you he only gets 2 handfuls of the stuff at night to put his supplement in. My bag lasts for 8 months because it takes me so long to get through it, using so little! So that should give you an indication.

I'm pretty positive that the list of ingredients on the Dengie site said mollasses, not mollasses extract....could be wrong though.

Yeah, the girl I spoke to mentioned that...and it's still got a very high fibre content(35%) so should be OK.
Thanks hun.....i'm sure she will

happy hoof is brill for the natives, it is approved by the lammy trust and is not quite as boring as plain chaff

could be stating the obvious here but chaff is chopped hay so if you are concerrned about molasses why not just chop some hay with a pair of scissors. if you only have a couple horses it takes no time, you dont need much and actually does the job it was intented for (to encourage horse to eat slowly and chew) much better if not cut too short. personally i think half the problems people get these dayys are due to all these molasses feeds, too much sugar wasnt a problem when we fed straights and i have returned to the old fashioned way in a great many cases on my yard.

I thought Baileys did a product called 'Just Chaff'?
My mare had post foaling laminitis & I use the hoof kind products such as Feel Good & Safe & Sound. They're formulated for laminitics & have added vitamins in pellet form, so they're a bit more interesting than plain chaff.

hifi lite is probably the best option iunless you just chop some oat straw yourself.
i found happy hoof fattened mine up too much although she much prefered it!
i used to have one bag last me 6 months for my fatty and it didnt go off at all.

if your only feeding a handfull dont think you have anything really to worry about which ever chaff you use?

[/ QUOTE ]

as with anything though, it's nice to know what's in it.
You wouldnt give your child 1/2 a mug of coca cola a day and not worry as it was 'only 1/2 a mug'.

know what you mean but i meant that as long as it was one of those chaffs mentioned, your not feeding in large quantites there shouldnt be a problem, i found the dengie people very helpfull, i always used happy hoof but one of mine is working quite hard and they suggested alpha a oil, it does your head in though so many types of chaffs on the market
