Hi everyone. I've been lurking for a little while and decided I should register and introduce myself!

I live in the Yarra Valley, Australia, and am considering a move to the UK. It will mean selling my horses here and looking for a new job (I've been in my current one for 12 years),and of course a lot of work around getting visas etc.

Has anyone here made the move from Australia to UK? My partner is English, but apart from him and his family, I won't know anyone!

Forgive me if this isn't the done thing or I have posted in the wrong spot :o
 
Hi from Scotland!:D Must be very exciting and scary moving to the other side of the world. Don't know anyone who has moved here from Aussie but a few freinds have gone to NZ and never looked back. :( The only down side would be that you would be giving up all that lovely sunshine :D but apart from that were alright.(well most of us lol).

Are you sure you want to live here??? a couple of years ago me and my hubby and kids were looking at coming to you :D

You won't miss home to much there is that much aussie stuff on tv here you will fill right at home :D

I live in Australia and it is pretty fun but ive always wondered what it would be like to live in the UK the snow would be great because we dont have it over here. I think moving there would give you chance to explore new things and it would be a great experience too!:);)
 
Hi there I lived in oz many moons ago working with racehorses in randwick then Jill a rooed for a while great fun ! So g day ! As for snow I can categorically confirm that you are not missing out on anything there sun is far superior !!
 
Welcome! Having an english OH and being horsey I would think you would have no problems moving over here and will make new friends v quickly (everyone loves an aussie :rolleyes: :) ).

People will tell you the weather is rubbish, but if you think of europe as being comparable to aus then you'll be fine. I mean, you can drive for 12 hours in australia and still be nowhere, you drive 12 hours from anywhere in england and you can be in some great places and you'll find some nice weather somewhere (spain is not that far - probably Perth - Port Hedland distance wise and you have all those french vineyards on the way....)

I did it the other way around. I'm english and moved to australia about 15years ago.
I didnt know anyone when I came here, but work and the horses helped to make friends really quickly.
You'll probably get sick of snow pretty quickly, esp if you have to try and get around, but the UK is great and having the rest of Europe on the doorstep is fantastic.

I did th eopposite and moved from UK to NZ - I love the weather in NZ and miss the extensive horsey scene in the UK. But here I can afford to have three horses, my own house, car & truck all on a lowish income.

You'll love UK though - you will be awed by the snow for a couple of hours then its a drudge getting pipes unfrozen , ice cold water slopped down your gum boots - by the way they call them 'Wellies' in the UK, lollies are sweets and ice blocks are iced lollies. Chips are crisps and hot chips are chips.

However you will be close to all the amazing theatres and europe too with Paris just a few hours away on the train and lots lots more - making myself homesick here! :D

NZ is beautiful right now - spring and trees coming to life. A thunderstorm brewing at the moment though.

Hi Bugalugs

I made the move in 1980 - I had one friend over here and came over to take BHS exams. Then met a Pom and married him - and been here ever since. I've never really regretted it (except when it's freezing cold!)
 
Move away ahead, sure wouldn't anything be better than Victoria?! :D

Only joking, I have no problems with Victoria... just an OH from NSW ;) My OH moved over to Ireland (he splits time between N.Ire and Eng now) - he'd been spending a good bit of time over here and in Eng before that so he knew what to expect, though the time over here had been during the summers. He got a bit of a culture shock during the winter, he didn't realise it would be that cold, rainy, windy and snowy! The first winter was a bit of a novelty for him, but once it was combined with a very poor summer he got very depressed about the next one.

He says he's found Ireland more comparable to Aus lifestyle/attitude wise, that sometimes he finds English people a little more unapproachable - not unfriendly at all, but just not like the Irish where we immediately want your life story upon setting eyes on you ;) but he enjoys it in Eng and made friends very quickly.

Luckily he had dual citizenship with Ireland so he didn't have a visa issue. My ex (also from NSW) had an awful time with visas though, and he had secure employment here. That could nearly be the trickiest part, though if your partner is English it should make things easier?
 
Oh wow, replies!! Tried to get online last night from the phone but it said there was a database issue.

On the visa front it may be a little easier than we first anticipated, as it looks as though I'm eligible for a UK ancestry visa as my Grandfather was born in Gateshead. Still, there's a tonne of paperwork to go through on that front. Looking forward to seeing if I can hunt some relatives down.

I would just love to be involved in the horsey scene over there! I spent around 15 years showing for a number of studs and have been concentrating on pony dressage for the last few years, as I'm pretty short! However, I would really love to be able to have some semi regular dressage lessons on a schoolmaster, doesn't seem all that common over here.

I'm terrified of the snow! Don't do cold all that well but I'm beginning to get really sick of our summers. In my spare time when I'm not doing horsey things I'm a firefighter and have been kept very busy. The Black Saturday fires in 2009 were just awful and stopped about 15 minutes (as the crow flies) away from my place. So, as cold as it might be over there, being away from that threat for a little while should do me good.

We'd be looking to move to the Cheltenham area, is anyone here from around there? My OH is keen to take me all over the place so owning a horse isn't really an option but I would like to be able to keep riding, I hear you guys have some decent bridle paths? (is that what you call them?) Too many main roads around my place and only babies to take out, so it doesn't happen and they can get a little arena sour.

Oh dear, I think I'm rambling... :D
