Hi from new cob owner

Hello and welcome! I am new to feathery ownership after years of smooth legs!

So far this year, I have just trimmed around the bottom of them where they were long and scraggly and dragging in the mud. plan to start on pig oil at some point but not sure when that point is yet 🤣
 
Hi! I am like you, new to the world of cobs. I got a sweet little mare back in May, her feather was so thick and long it dragged the ground. I trimmed with scissors but eventually clipped her leg out mostly because she was stamping a bit and I thought she might have mites. I found out then that she had CPL (early stages) so am glad the feather is gone because now I can keep an eye on it, keep it clean etc- though it needs doing every 3-4 weeks.

I’m there too, have bought the pig oil but kegs are always to dirty and damp to apply at the moment!
 
I would like to clip the legs as although his feather is magnificent I’d like to be able to see what’s underneath. He seems pretty scared of clippers though
 
Hello. I use Selsun 2.5% shampoo, and scrub from knees/hocks to ground, getting right down to the skin. Start off on day 1, then again on day 5 and again on day 10. This is to clear any hatchlings. Mites are not blood feeders, they live on skin debris, so removing dandruff and scabs effectively removes the mites and their food supply. A bit labour intensive, but once clear you may only have to repeat a couple of times a year, unless he is catching mites from another horse.
