I've joined after a year of lurking. I have 4 horses an old Tb a 1 eyed appy a near 40 yr old welshy and a 19yr old stockhorse. I haven't ridden for 1yr as the 19yr old with cold back problem bucked me off. Resulting in a broken neck...4 broken ribs..collapsed lung and neck brace for 1 yr.. I have been told by oh that I am not allowed to ride jemima again and I'm broken hearted. What would you all do?. Cheers from Tasmania.

I had a head injury and was told by the consultant that I couldn't ride until the spring (this was in the October).
I decided to listen to the consultants opinion, but I did get back on just the once. I got my friends to keep an eye on me, went into the paddock and I jumped a single fence once to get my confidence back and put the horse away after.
I just needed to get that part out of my system at the time otherwise I'd have dwelled on it forever.

I certainly wouldn't get back on a horse that has a known cold back problem and had bucked me off. A cold back is a symptom of pain. I would weigh up whether to go for vet investigations, to see if the problem causing pain is fixable - if no longer in pain she may well be rideable again (but still, would you want to take that risk?). What level of treatment I'd go for would depend on the diagnosis and prognosis for a 19 year old horse. Or, if horse is sound when not in work, I'd retire her.

Really sorry to hear about your awful accident! I certainly wouldn't be wanting to get back on after that accident tbh. Perhaps you can add another horse to your group if you want to continue riding - perhaps a loan horse, if that's possible in Tasmania?

I hope you don't mind me asking, but what is horse-owning and riding like in Tasmania - are there many Riding Clubs and competitions?

Hi there. I think I would not get on a cold backed horse that is likely to buck again. I would wait till my neck felt strong and sound again, possibly backed up with X rays to assess healing, and make sure I kept my muscle strength and fitness up. Then I would look for a nice horse that was calm, sensible, injury free and non spooky. In so far as any of them are! If I had a friend with a nice calm horse that I could ride out in company with someone, I might do that to start off with, to make sure I felt ok. I would be careful to start with.

That sounds lovely - we’ve currently got five inches of snow and forecast of -8 tonight.... Maybe find one less risky and enjoy your summer together - thinking of you (enviously!)

I'm so envious that you are just getting into your summer! 🌞 That's really interesting to hear about having horses in Tasmania - with the Riding Clubs, shows and competitions.

Have a good summer! 🏇
