Well, here I am, getting back into horses after a long break, and where better to start, since you look like a friendly bunch!

A bit about me - I used to ride in my teens, but had to give up when I left school, as full time work didn't sit too well with horse care (and the parents decided that since I was working it might be a good idea to pay my horse's way!)

I have a fab new job with a large horse charity and it's made me decide to get back into the highs and heartbreaks that make up equestrianism. Once me and the old man get our finances straight I plan to adopt a rescue horse, possibly a mature boy or girl, which all being well will happen in the next 12 months, so I'll be dropping by with all sorts of daft questions for y'all!

Meanwhile, does anyone have any experience with rescue horses, particularly those of the older variety? I heartily believe in giving animals a chance of a useful and loving home (I've owned several dogs, only one of which wasn't recycled, the current one being an ex RSPCA Saluki. My most recent acquisitions have been four spiny mice and a pair of Muscovy ducks.

Anyway, enough already!

I'm probably not the best person to be answering this, but after years of experience of riding and owning horses and with the death of my old TB I decided that I would rehome a rescue horse... my only advice would be to look at the horse that you are wanting to rehome and to visit as many times as you can to see if the horse is truly for you.

I didn't have a positive experience with having a rescue horse and it has put me off from loaning from a rescue centre. However, I know of people who have been lucky and have had cracking horses from sanctuaries.

Ive been round 2 rescue horses . One from ilph and one from france . They are hard work and u need alot of knowlege for the ones ive seen . But there not all like the 2 ive been in contact with . But i tend to think of rescue horses will have some sort of issues for the fact they have been mistreated . Im my opinion anyway.

Yes, I realise that some will have issues, but I also feel that a lot will be overlooked because of their age, and I'm no spring chicken myself so I know how that feels (!) so I'm not after a competition horse, or even one that needs bringing on - maybe later, when I get used to being around horses again and my riding gets back up to standard.

I have contacts through work who'll advise me where to go when the time comes, but it's nice to have a bit of first-hand experience, so all opinions welcome, even if experiences are negative ones.

Hi DD and welcome. I have a veteran who was "rescued" from overwork, emaciation and misery at a riding school. He's now plump, happy, safe and we have developed an amazing and very precious bond. I have also recently taken on a rescued mare who had terrible ragwort poisoning from ignorant owners leaving her in a field with no grass but yellow with ragwort. She's doing fine now but you have to be prepared for hefty veterinary bills. My neds live at Llwyncwns (forum member) livery yard and she was recently on HTV re the Operation Esther work as she regularly takes on rescue horses and has a HUGE amount of experience. It was Llwyncwn that stopped me from following the vet's advice to pts my ragwort poisoned girl and give her a chance as she seemed to be responding. I'm sure she would be more than happy to answer any queries you might have. It's great to know someone else out there wants to help in this way x
