i only occasionally pop on here but just wanted to ask i have a 4 year old and would it be ok to say once a week maybe less take him for a canter down one of the fields? ive been told not to do any fast work with him as hes a baby still. ever so confused now as ive been getting him fit hacking him out and he just seems to want to occasionally just let go dont want to do him harm tho.
thanks

Unless he is very immature, can't see a problem myself and I'm all for taking it slow with youngsters. TBH it's more important to limit the length of time you rider for rather than the pace you ride in with yougsters.

My now 19yo loved a canter around a field when was 4yo - did most of his early schooling in a field as long as ground wasn't too hard as he was so unbalanced he couldn't canter a circle in the school as it was too tight for him (used to fly buck me off!) swapped for field and kept things nice and easy and he was fine - he is now 19yo and has never had a day lame (other than when kicked in the knee and stitched up) and has never yet walked out stiff in the morning.

As long as you are sensible with the ground you will be fine

brill cheers for clearing that up, i always thought just letting him let off steam once in a while would actually help him concentrate on his other work a bit better rather than jogging allong with me thanks guys
