Hello,

I'm new to this forum, after lurking for a couple of days I have decided to join :)
I don't own a horse at the moment as I have only been riding for 4 years, but I have been helping at a stable for all this time so I am quite confident that If i had the money to look after a horse I could with some help manage it!

Anyway I am looking for a horse share and thought I would ask this forum if it would be cheeky to ask if I could do stable work/duties in return for riding rather than paying money?

Thanks :D

Yes, before i could afford my own horse I used to share a horse and would muck out, make feeds etc on "my days" in return for riding.

I didn't pay anything, if I had a sharer now I wouldn't expect them to pay - it would be becuase i didn't have enough time for the horse etc.

Put adverts up in your local tack shops - this is the best way to find something close to where you live

ETS: Be aware most people offering shares, haven't time to teach you riding etc - so you would need to pay for lessons or whatever on said share horse :-)

Normally you'll have to pay a bit too as duties for one horse don't add up to as much as what an owner'd get with a paid-for share. E.g. it costs 8 pounds a day for my (share) horse to be mucked out but around 10 pounds a day + half of shoeing costs for many share arrangements.

If you really can't afford to contribute any cash (and the amount will be less the more chores you do/less great the facilities are etc, etc) then I'd suggest asking local riding schools or livery stables about working for rides (this will depend a lot on your age). There you might have to muck out a few horses in return for an hours ride or something.

You could try. But I wouldn't advise replying to ads where they are asking for money....

I wouldn't let someone ride my horse in return for looking after it. But that is because I enjoy and have time to look after my horse and don't need help. Obviously some people may be in a different position. But I am also of the view that horses are expensive animals, so unless I needed help because of time, I don't see why someone should be able to ride my horse for nothing.

Have a look around though. You may well be able to find something.
