Hi everyone im new. Just a question i found this in my field where my horses are turned out does anybody know what it is? Its held deep in the ground with a metal pipe, there is some writing on it but its so rusty we cant read it.
Thanks

Haha we thought it might be an old water mains?? Do you think a sprinkler would have a pipe deep into the ground??

ermmm im not sure, I dont know about old farm sprinkler systems, as im guessing they are not attached to a hose I wouldnt have thought.

No an old water mains is also a more sensible suggstion

:S not so good! I think i'll do that although i have the deeds to the land and theres no pipe work at all shown on them :S

Also it is a trip hazard for your horses etc so would prob be best getting it removed, but obv you need to know what the hell it is before assessing that

I think you need to dig a little deeper, but it looks like an old stub axle, or bit of machinery, that has been whacked into the ground to act as an anchor for whatever that cable was attached to.

If it starts ticking....RUN

Just asked my trusty farmer dad and he said it's a mine!! - Only kidding!! Anyway, in all seriousness he said it was a tractor half shaft!! - Not quite sure what that is but I hope it helps!!

I asked sum1 and they said like above it looks like machinery or something, it could be something off a tractor or something!!!!

Yes it is a lorry halfshaft that has been used as a tether point. it is a rod about three feet long with the end cap ,you can see. it should pull out of the ground reasonably easily if you hit it sideways, back and forwar, with a sledge hammer .
If not, a tractor foreloader or 3 point linkage should do the trick.
