Hi, I'm new! Photographs of my darling girl

O my, they are just so gorgeous. What do you get if you cross one with a 'normal' horse? This probably sounds so stoopid but what are they like as people and are they easy to look after. Do you just treat them the same as any other horse. They looks so different it's almost hard to belive they're the same thing!

She initially was ridden with a bit, bit she didn't like it, no matter what bit we tried. As soon as we went bitless she became a different horse, just totally willing to please!

Actually, it isn't known whether Tekes were bred from Arabs, or Arabs came from Tekes, because they really are quite similar. We have to use several methods of transport to get the horses over to Canada - lorry, ferry and by air, it takes a long time because they need to have frequent breaks.

They are very thin skinned, and do require some special treatment, particularly in summer. As with any breed there are many different personalities; Pagoda is a sweetie pie, and follows you around like a dog, while Davinia likes to be more independent. They are crossed with 'normal' horses, most commonly warmbloods, quarter horses, arabs and appaloosas. They are also crossed with Welsh ponies or caspians to make kids ponies.
 
I love a nice Akhal-Teke! Your's is a beauty for sure :D My Mum's company sells riding holidays and we had a fab one in Turkmenistan, riding Teke stallions. Unfortunately there are all kinds of crazy visa requirements for Turkmenistan now so we can't offer that holiday, but we hope to run it again in the future. The hosts sent my Mum a beautiful book on Tekes, it's really lovely. They're her favourite breed... which is saying something when she looks at photos of horses and talks about them all day!

What a fascinating thread - thank you Pagoda.

When I was a little girl I used to cherish my Observer book of horses and ponies and the picture of the Akhal Teke used to almost mesmorise me - I will never forget it.

I had a book of horse breeds when I was a kid and used to always go to the page with the akhal-tekes. They are amazing looking, you are very
lucky. Do they have nice personalities?

Your mare is stunning! I must admit that the Akhal-Teke is not my cup of tea, but I can appreciate their beauty :)
 
Wonderful horses. Isn't it amazing how fragile they look? And yet they have a reputation for being incredibly tough, I'm sure I read somewhere that they make fantastic endurance horses. Cheers for putting the photos up, they're lovely.

What AMAZING horses you have! their colourings are beautiful! Pagoda is lovely and I love that photo of the little one with huge fluffy ears.
Im definitely going to read up about this breed now. Never seen them apart from in books.

Pagoda, the name of the book is 'Akhalteke, A Great Racer Of History' and was published by Ashgabat in 2003. It has a lot of great photos and talks about the history of the breed. There is even a note in the front from the President of Turkmenistan.

Below are some photos from the riding holiday that my Mum's company used to offer with Akhal-Tekes. It can no longer run because visitors can't say in Turkmenistan more than a week and it's hard to get into the country, all a bit confusing! I just thought some of you might like to see some more Teke photos (and it's not advertising as we can't/don't sell it anymore!). :)

This breed has always fascinated me! I cannot say I have ever seen one in the flesh but the photographs I have seen have made me intrigued ever since I was a little girl. I remember the first picture that I saw of one in a breed book and its coat truly looked at if it was highly poilshed spun gold! Nobody can deny that that are eye catching and unique.


Where are you in Canada? It woud be wonderful if you were ever able to get her to the Midwest Horse Fair here in Madison Wisconsin in the spring. It is one of the largest horse fairs in the US held every year. They have featured just about every beed but I cannot say that I have seen one of them here. You would be a crowd pleaser for sure.
