Hi-Viz. A well done and a poll

Thanks to HHO I now ALWAYS wear Hi-viz out hacking.

When I was but a pup, I viewed Hi-viz as uncool - something for people, who couldn't really ride, to wear.

Now I am wear at the very least, a tabard, leg wraps and a neck cover. I am now one of those who looks down on people who DON'T wear Hi-Viz.

I happilly see all the kids at my yard wearing hi-viz to go out hacking and I always try to compliment them on the newest piece of Hi-Viz they have!

I think the trend on Hi-Viz is changing and rightly so. If we can change the connotations of hi-viz, we may be able to save lives and every single rider has the ability to make an impact on the younger generation by wearing and encouraging Hi-viz.

Please could you answer the poll to see how people feel about hi-viz now?

Do you wear Hi-Viz to hack out?

Sometimes but rarely - My hacking consists of either private off road hacking or a country park with no traffic . I also only hack in broad daylight (usually about 10am)

Do you wear more or less hi-viz than you used to?

I just wear it when needed(if we are going on a longer hack with road work) as it is provided by the yard !

Up to about five years ago, I would only wear it when visibility was poor, but then I was riding out on a sunny day, and someone stopped to point out I was nearly invisible in the shade of the hedge, so now I always wear it whilst hacking.
 
Ishy I didn't use to worry about off-road hacking either, but after hearing that helicopter pilots have been known to thank riders for wearing hi-viz so they can avoid flying over them and from rescue pilots saying how a striken rider wearing hi-viz is SO much easier for them to find, I now wear it even then!

And having driven round a bend in a lane, on a sunny day, I know that even in broad daylight, the dappled light and glass reflections mean I'd still appreciate a rider to wear hi-viz.

I don't know why I never used to wear it; nobody seemed to when I was learning to ride, and until I learned to drive I never appreciated how difficult it can be to see other road users.
 
The only time I go out and about is when I'm at work, we have a hi-viz sign on the back of the marathon (which is black) and when our VSM is about or the headcoachman remembers we wear tabbards. TBH we should have something on the nosebands too seing as we're a long vehical. We need to get into the habit really, like seatbelts, we've only been doing this for about a year.

What's weird though is that when we're doing rides we wear nothing even though we go on the roads (main road to a NT property so busy) and we're a 12 seater waggonette brake (Brake= 4 wheeled open top vehical, waggonette= seats face in at back so you can imagine tis v big!) I guess our VSM would say it destroys the "country turnout" look but shes the same person who shouts if we don't wear hi-vis on the tiny marrathon!

Luckilly now we've moved onto percherons they're all grey (all going propper white) which gives us a slight advantage. Well it makes me feel better than when we have blacks/bays!
 
I nearly always wear my Hi Viz, even though there are very few roads around the yard. My line of thinking is that if I had a bad fall and no one knew where I was, at the very worst an air ambulance would have a better chance of spotting me if I had Hi Viz on

I wear it whenever I am out on the roads, and I am 14.

I wear a tabard, and the horses wear band type things round their boots on all 4 legs, and also sometimes an exercise sheet (although they don't wear that in summer).

My horses mean too much to me to not wear any!
 
I always used to wear it when hacking involved the lanes but didn't if I was going across the fields. An earlier discussion on here it was pointed out to me that it hi-viz made it easier to find you in the event (god forbid) of an accident. Now I wear it whenever I ride anywhere other than the school - don't care what I look like as my horses and my life mean so much more to me than looking 'cool'. My 13 year old neice also has to wear hi-viz when she is riding - as well as body protector and hat - very uncool I'm sure but it keeps her safe.

Dont do any road work - but a sensible comment on here made me think that any rescue team looking for you would find you easier not something I had thought about , so riding in the mountains might now consider wearing hi-viz .

Ok, so i dont wear Hi-viz and it is a very bad thing of me, however i am used to non-road type hacking and the only roads we used to hack on were rarely busy and full of horses being ridden by others in the area.

I did buy a tabbard but it never fitted so i never wore it (the intention was there) currently i cant even ride my horse atm (wayyy too much going on with everything else) but i know i should invest in one and probably wil again. I try to at least make sure im wearing my red jacket when i did used to hack.
 
I have been wearing hiviz for the last 17 years, since we "acquired" some from a friend who worked for an electricity company (you couldn't buy it anywhere at that time). We frequently stopped the traffic as drivers thought we were the police!

Nowadays I always wear hiviz to hack out, even though ALL our hacking is off road. We often meet dog walkers, joggers and cyclists, and the occasional farm vehicle on the forest tracks, and it means we are more visible through the trees.

I also think I would be more easy to spot if I fell off and was unable to move.

I nearly always wear it. Sometimes I forget and cant be arsed getting off to go get some... but if out on roads/bad visibility then always wear some.

Don't think anyone at that yard does...bit silly I guess as while the roads are very quiet the cars we do meet are either Moy Park lorries or chavs from Dungannon...

I wear more than I used to because current YO doesnt let you out without it, so its become habit.
 
I have beenwearing hi vis for over 20 years when riding so nothing has changed for me. I wear whether on or off the road and our local landowners who permit riding on their land require us to wear it for identification purposes anyway
 
I wear a long sleeved hi-viz jacket as other road users can see my hand signals more easily. Tend to always wear Hi-Viz even when hacking off road just in case something happens as it would be easier to find me.

Motorists see Hi-Viz 5 seconds earlier.
 
yup always what ever the weather, bear minimum tabard and sexy lycra hat cover.

Maximum (if it is horrid) sheet, leg bands, nose band, gloves and flashing red light tabard. and anything in between.

More because I would hate something to happen to my horse due to my not wearing anything and since driving I know how hard it can be to see stuff.

Re the helicopters- unfortunately the low flying jets come a bit quick but the horses don't seem to mind too much as they go so quick!
 
I would agree with you - I always used to wear a tabbard but not so much in really nic summer weather. I have probably for the last 4-5 years as a min had tabbard and leg wraps as a minimum. I have no problem about wearing Hi-viz wear it all the time now no matter how sunny it is - you can NEVER be too careful!

Yep always wear Hi-Viz. I have the pink stuff, but I think the yellow stuff is brighter. Rosie has a pink reflective neck band too. At the end of the day I would rather look like an un-fashionable plonker than road kill!!!!
 
I wear it all the time, even schooling, without thinking about it. I put on my hat, I put on my hi-viz, no need to think 'is it too light? is it too dark? am I going on a hack? will there be cars?'. It's easier to just wear and if I don't need it, so what?
 
I wear a tabard with 'caution:young horse' on it, noseband and rein covers, and leg wraps on the back. For some reason my horse doesn't like leg wraps on the fores and looks like she is doing Spanish walk in them!
 
Can anyone answer a question for me please? I understand that pink hi viz is better for sunny weather and yellow for dull overcast weather - is this correct?
 
I always wear high-viz - at the very least my tabard, and my horse has rein strips and a noseband and sometimes wears her leg bands and exercise sheet too. If I don't wear it, it would be in summer if I was only going along the 100yds of quiet road to get to the miles of off-road hacking we have through the local woods. I usually wear my tabard in the woods though in case I fall off into a bush

I wear more than I used to, certainly since I started driving four/five years ago. I am far more aware now that horse riders cannot expect to be seen and avoided unless they are making themselves visible. I have passed people with dark clothing on dark horses and not been able to see them until the last minute... then last night for example I met two riders going out at 6.30pm who were both lit up with high-viz gear and spotted them half a mile off - literally.
I really get annoyed when I see riders on the roads without even a tabard on.
 
I use it most of the time---long-sleeved jacket for me, exercise sheet for pony. The problem is that it's been too warm for both of those items lately. For summer, I think it'll be tabard and/or hat silk for me, leg bands for pony.

If I'm headed straight into the woods, no roads, I sometimes don't wear hi-viz, but I really should!
 
Always wear Hi-Viz if road hacking but not if going in the fields. Should really I suppose seeing as the yard is right near an airport

I am more safety conscious now than I used to be as a kid. The thought of wearing Hi-Viz would *never* have occurred to me back then
 
I've worn Hi-Viz ever since I had my own pony (12 years) and wear a tabbard and hat band year round and exercise sheet bridle and tail bands if riding in poor visability on the roads.

I still wear Hi-viz when I'm not intending to ride on the roads as it makes me more visable to cyclists and walkers on the bridleways. I also wear Hi-Viz when walking out in-hand.
