This morning in a village that is known for accidents (and rude riders) (Hutton!!) I slowed down & passed 4 different lots of riders, majority wearing hi viz, but not one single thankyou, how rude. I can seriously understand why people don't bother slowing down  Rant over :)

Well it wasn't me as I always say thank you! It annoys me too and unfortunately the driver is now so fed up that not even a courteous nod was given he/she will not bother to slow down next time....

Yes it annoys me too, doesn't cost anything or take any effort to smile or nod, waive etc it gives other riders a bad name as you say.

But whether riders say thank you or not, I'd always slow down for them and expect other road users to do the same for me, regardless of being thanked, it's just common sense.... unless your not bothered about reducing the risk of half of ton of horse across your car.

:)

It is a shame some riders spoil things for the rest - I always say thank you to drivers who slow down.

However, I don't see what the fact that the riders were wearing hi viz has to do with it though ...

I agree that is annoying. I always say thank you , unless they are idiots that don't bother slowing down. But on the other hand some drivers can be very rude too... teh amount of times i have gone into a field, or just pulled my horse over where possible so cars can go past and drivers have been so ignorant and not said thank you! These are country lanes by the way and luckily my horse is good in traffic, but still i know how frustrating it can be being behind a horse, but if they would to be thanked, it goes both ways...sorry rant over.

It does seem like the easiest thing in the world to wave, nod or smile at a passing car that slows down. Yes its annoying but I wouldn't let it stop me from slowing down for every single horse I pass though, and I don't understand how anyone can fail to slow down, regardless of how rude the riders are - at the end of the day its a safety issue and "some riders don't thank me for slowing down" is not going to be an acceptable excuse should there be an accident with a car that has not followed the highway code

i only thank cars when its safe to do so, unfortunately when hacking alone on roads taz can be very spooky at some places on our hacks especially on the busy bit so if it is safer for me not to thank cars and keep my horse from spooking like an idiot which could cause some trouble, the most they will get is a smile/nod, but focussing on the road like a driver should they dont usually notice, half the time, if you wave they arent interested where i live, they think we shouldnt be allowed on the roads in the first place and speed off.
