This is a bit of a numpty question I guess but I've never had to buy one before and have no idea what would be best.

I need a Hi-Viz dog coat for the Setter. It's not possible for me to walk him in the daytime due to a few reasons so I generally take him out at around 4:30/5:00pm and he has an hour/2 hours in the park. The problem is, he is a dark chestnut so is quite easy to lose sight of.

So, I need recommendations for a Hi-Viz dog coat that will fit a fairly large Red Setter and that will stand up to wear and tear and energetic galloping about.

I wanted to hold out for Olympia but really, need one sooner than that.

Thank you :).

Spudlet, I think I love you :D. Thank you! :D. I shall have a look later on as there's one near me :D.

I automatically discounted them as I thought they'd be too expensive/rubbish. That will teach me  :D.

Ahem, if you have a Budgens shop near you, they have them for £1 !!!! Take that Spudlet! :D

They go right up to XXL and are mesh rather than material so the dog doesn't get hot when hooning :)

umm - i'd not recommend pets at home ones tbh :o
i've got them - fab for the first wee while - but the reflective strips are not flexible - they are a plastic material - so i went to wash them - didn't think twice and rung them out and the strips all broke/snapped (for want of a better word) not great when they are on working dogs who get muddy every day! doh! i'd now make sure i went of ones with 'felexible' reflective strips like you get on high viz horse rugs

Ahhhh, that's a bit of a bummer :(. I am really desperate for a coat for him as I have to keep calling him back to me because I can't see him in the park and it's not really fair on him to keep calling him back to me for no reason!

To be honest, I don't mind paying out £5.00 for it to tide me over until I go to Olympia or find something better.

Failing that, if the strips break then I'd replace them with some reflective stickers you can get for coats and things.

A large type lab takes an extra large in the pets at home ones. They were about £7 last month, but are very good. Wish they covered their backs too - they go to the end of their ribs basically, but definately do their job...

He's quite deep in the chest so I think I'll get XL size. I just want something that makes him visible really and if it tears or the reflective bits go then I'll replace it.

He doesn't get cold so the fact it only goes to the end of their ribs is fine :D.

Thanks all, I'll try the Pets at Home one and if that doesn't hold out, I'll look for something else. The Equafleece ones are beyond my budget at the moment I am afraid :o.

I just measured our two on the ribcage - big strong lab type lab is 33" and takes an XL. Little sporty type lab is 26" and a medium is big on him.

They are really good - ours get wet and muddy in them and they don't com off, whereas the Robinsons one used to fall off all the time when wet (they don't make them anyway now). Our choc lab is now very easy to spot in the dark, and they have lots of reflective strips so cars pick them up should they get on the road... Can't fault them really!

How about one of these instead - they are great:

Well, I went to Pets At Home today and they had the little mesh type hi-viz coats in at £1.50 each :D :D.

Got it home and tried it on and it is a bit big but nothing a needle and thread to shorten the elastic won't sort out :D.
I took him for a quick walk on the lead today (he's strained one of his legs) and the coat was indeed very bright and reflective. Cars took a lot more notice when we were waiting at roadsides so I am very pleased indeed. It has so far stood up to a few minutes of H trying to pull it off when it was first put on him  and stayed in place during his walk, even though it was a bit loose, so top marks to Pets At Home :D.

As they were only £1.50, I got one for the Spangle too and being black, he looks very trendy in his :D.

Gina&Prince; thanks for that. The collar looks great :). He has a skinny neck so not sure how well that would stay on but may try it anyway if he wrecks his coat .

Thanks everyone for the various hints, tips and pointers about the various choices out there :). Very helpful and I shall keep a look out at Olympia for a nice coat for him as I am tempted to get him a little quilt or something :o :D.

Thermatex are not too much at the shows got my last one at burghley lasted years just replaced it at HOYS for £9 for a large size And his collar does get funny looks but everyone always asks were it's from :-) he doesn't mind the attention

Those little flashing things that clip on their collars are really good too - they're usually a couple of quid, and I think I've bought them from tescos as well as pet shops. I've even thought about clipping some on the back of the horses rugs when we lead them up the lane in the dark! If you don't have daft labs like outrs, that jump in every bit of water around, they would last quite some time!

Glad you got the coat - haven't seen the £1.50 ones!! Bargain!

I like the sound of the Deluxe Thermatex :o :D.

Honey08; good idea about he flashing clip-on lights but unfortunately, if there is water to jump in or play with, he will find it  :D. Current favourite spot is a foot-wide pit that fills with water in the rain. He immerses himself in it almost totally  :D.

The coat needed a bit of adjustment (shortening of the elastic around the rib area as he is a skinny ribs) but it has lasted well so far :D.
