Do the kind that go under the saddle work or do they slip? Are the ones that wrap round the rider better? Also what size would I need for a horse that takes a 6ft rug normally? Thanks.
You can get a one that wraps around the rider (over the legs) or one that goes under the saddle. Click here.. I think the only difference is that the one that wraps around the riders is that the riders legs stay dry. Not too sure.
Second to last chart on this page gives you a rough idea of sizes: http://www.tds-saddlers.co.uk/customerinfo.asp
So your horse would probably need a 4'6" sheet according to the chart.
I find wrap-around ones better, but only because of the ease of removing or fitting them once the saddle is on. The proper sheet-style ones don't slip if they have girth loops, and the wrap-around ones have never slipped in my experience. The only type I hate are the quarter sheet ones, they are so unstable and flap around everywhere - I got taken off with once when mine slipped off to one side and my pony thought she was about to get eaten! We galloped along the road straight towards a main road... eek. Never used one of those since!
i have a qarter one whch goes under the saddle, which I rarely use as it slips back and pushes down on H withers. will only use for road hacks and am constanlty pulling it up into the gullet of the saddle.
ive got both a wrap-round & under the saddle 1's
Tbh, i dont like the under the saddle 1 gor the same reason as gentle_warrior & it doesnt have a tail flap! i mainly use my wrap-round but i usually put it under the saddle flap to help keep it in place (& less faffing for me!) i only put it round me if its raining
Got a broken collar bone and wrist from an under the saddle sheet pulling too tight on a horse a few years back. Since then only used the quarter sheet type, don't have any problems with it.
