Hi-viz recommendations

My husband loves a really long hack but as the nights start to draw in he sometimes ends up out when it is getting dark. He has lots of hi-viz and some lights so is always visible but I would like to buy him some more for his birthday.

He has a gilet and a long sleeved jacket, plus a hat band and arm/leg bands for him.

Horse has an exercise sheet and breastplate.

So recommendations for other stuff would be welcome. Criteria are; must be available in men's sizes if it is clothing, preferably not pink, easy to put on and take off, and the horse refuses to wear fly bonnets.

I can never find quality, well designed hi viz. So many equestrian jackets are made from great textiles and are very functional, but come in dark colours which are useless for hacking out.
This year, I'm going to put hi viz reflective tape on my jackets that are orange or yellow.
 
I have V- Bandz leg wraps for my cob - I think they were about £25ish for a set of 4. They come in orange and yellow, as well as pink and yellow! Quick and easy to put on and take off with velcro straps. I need to wash mine after most rides so have both sets, but they are really hardwearing.
They're the one thing I would put on the horse if nothing else, apparently drivers are quick to notice them moving as attached to legs, and near their eye level if in cars.
V-Bandz have some other nice things on their website.
I also have some orange (HKM, I think they come in yellow and a lime green too) and yellow (Roma) saddle pads, don't think they are safety accredited but they are bright!
 
leg bands are important-I now ride a black pony and he has a BridleWay tail thing in orange-one cyclist told me it really stood out when I was downhill from him. I like the Bridleway stuff, its all orange, stands out well and not girly.
 
Legbands on the horse are the thing that other road-users notice first.

Check the measurements of them before you buy though both in circumferencce and depth especially if you have a horse with short cannons.

I do wish I hadn't seen this thread though - somehow I've managed to buy some new can-be-seen-from-space stuff from one of the links mentioned, how on earth did that happen :) ;)

I will look at the hat band, he has one already but stopped using it as it damaged the velvet on his hat maybe there are better designs.

We have some leg wraps too but don't use them much. They slip down madam's skinny legs unless you put them over brushing boots. Might see if there are better ones.

Has anyone got a hi-viz whip?

I ordered one online, but it turned out to just be a yellow whip. (Probably serves me right for ordering it from a sex shop, but it was the cheapest one!) I picked up some hi-viz/reflective tape from Aldi's bike range and keep meaning to wrap it round one of my plain black schooling whips.

How about a light up one?
 
Hat bands are very good as often the rider’s head is the first thing to be seen bobbing about above a hedge, before the rest of the horse and rider comes into view. I have my hat band over a silk on my crash hat, there’s no issue about the band damaging the silk.

Speaking of Aldi’s bike range, their cyclist armband things are the perfect size to strap around brushing boots. We’ve had yellow and white reflective ones at different points and they have flashing lights on them.
 
We have a workwear shop in Swindon. It's a mine of hi viz, at a fraction of the cost of equestrian stuff. I have hi viz fleece lined trousers, a workman's gillet, and my most recent treasure, a fabulous orange/reflective/waterproof soft shell jacket, which I'm not allowed to wear when out with my family although I'd like to as it's so comfy! Aldi sell these when they have their cycle event on, they are normally £4.99 a pair. You can also buy them on both e-bay and amazon. They are elasticated so fit around your horses legs, I put one on the off fore and one on the off hind. You just press the button and they either flash on / off or you press them again and each light bulb lights up in succession in a row. They are a cheap light weight alternative to more expensive 'horsey' brands and they are brilliant if you are out on a bright sunny day because you can see them for a distance (up to 1/4 mile) and also if you are riding down a country lane that has a covering of overhanging trees and you would be very hard to see - they certainly make you stand out.

I really think equestrian manufacturers are missing a trick here. Currently, workwear
hi viz is as good, and cheaper than the current selection offered for the specialist equestrian market.
Cycling and running sportswear have practical and stylish hi viz, but it's not warm enough for those cold winter hacks when much of the time is spent at a slow pace.
I remember Puffa made a nice warm jacket with reflective thread sewn through the jacket, unfortunately, it was only available in navy, which slightly defeated the object.

Yes these are the ones I mean! Love them.
 
I also use the flashing Aldi armbands as leg bands, usually over his normal hi-vis wraps.

I have an aversion to anything that says "equestrian" in front of it as it normally doubles the cost so have two different "workwear" hi-vis waterproof coats, one yellow and one orange. They are both super warm and completely waterproof, although not the most stylish garments ever but frankly that isn't important to me.

We have those already, and use them on our arms and legs. They are too big for the horse's skinny legs though.

Most of our hi-viz is from aldi their red/white LED light is brilliant too.

Totally agree, so much of the equestrian stuff is rubbish, cycling stuff is better so I buy that and just put warm clothes underneath. Husband cycles too so can make double use of cycling hi-viz.

Sorry Lexi just realised you had mentioned Aldi before me. Aldi used to do loads of horsey stuff, I bought a brilliant hi viz breast plate from them and I also bought two hi viz exercise sheets which are still going strong four or five years later. The 'Crane' label stuff is amazing.
 
I go cheap and cheerful, Yoko hi vis vest in orange with pockets so I can take phone etc, can get 2 delivered for under £12 if you look around on internet. Go a size up to fit over a BP.Screenshot_20190827-140747_Chrome.jpg

V stretchy hat cover in bright orange like this, but brighter when you see it.

Fuzzy will have at least a bright orange saddlecloth or numnah, I don't do any roadwork where I am, but all the dog walkers say I stand out a mile! 😂

In the winter I pop this over the top, current one is bright yellow lime, they are often reduced.
