The horse flies are a bit late arriving here, but they are now out in force.

After recent events, I will only continue to ride out on the roads if my horse is wearing hi viz as well as me. I usually use a hi viz quarter sheet which protects her bum, but the little feckers are tormenting her on her chest and neck. I’ve seen a cheapie Gallop ride on hi viz fly rug for a good price on Amazon, anyone tried one? Or got any other suggestions? Thanks.

Not seen that one but I had one (premier equine I think) for Bisto who went demented around horse flies. It worked well except occasionally a fly got under it and then we were in trouble! Mine wasn't hi viz as such but it was white red and blue so you couldn't miss us!
 
I've got the Gallop one-its quite well thought out but with it being Gallop, they are a little tight on the cut so I wish I had gone up a size-he is a Fell beast though, big neck and huge front. Lots of people got them last year and seemed quite happy with them.

I have one in 5'9 if anyone wants to buy it.
 
Good thread. I've never known such a bad year for horse flies. It's made hacking impossible locally, they've been attacking the horses en masse. Fly spray is absolutely useless, so for the first time ever, I'm looking at fly rugs for exercising.
Quite like the design of the Amigo Fly rider because it won't pull across the chest while riding. Just wondered if the neck size is generous though.
 
I have the Gallop one and am REALLY pleased with it. I got the 6ft and use it on short fat coblet and taller skinnier TB. Yes, you can tell Gallop are at the budget end, but any fly rug I used would get attacked by low-hanging brambles etc. and to be fair, it's holding up really well - into its second summer now, but used it all winter too. The leg straps are a bit short, the saddle hole a bit long, but it doesn't move, doesn't rub, doesn't really make them sweat up, and the cars really react to it. I need a second one now as friend is riding my TB in it, leaving coblet and me to be eaten alive...
 
Thanks, all. It must be full hi viz rather than just bright colours. Tammy was wearing the yellow and orange V bandz quarter sheet in my avatar last week when she was nearly hit from behind by a car on the road, it may just have made the difference to the driver missing her rather than colliding with her.

I’ve ordered the gallop one, it’s £34.99 on Amazon and I’ve sized up to 7’0” after comments that they come up a bit small, thanks. I’ll see how I get on with it, she’s pretty chunky.

I’ve also messaged V bandz to see if they have any plans to introduce a ride on fly rug, seeing as I like their products.
 
Thanks to those kind HHOers who recommended the Gallop ride on hi viz. It does seem to work well. I took ages to work out how to fit the thing as it doesn’t have the usual Velcro fastening in front of the pommel, but seeing as you lot are happy with yours, this was just be me being thick as usual :D. Got there in the end. Sizing up (to the largest size) was a good move. too. The ears and leg wraps are from V bandz.

I always loosen her up in hand for 10 mins in walk before I hop on, so here she is pre hack. I wasn’t sure if tightening up the girth once on would be an option, but I did manage to. She and I are not used to leg straps, but they seemed to be ok, too. There was no evidence of any rubbing anywhere when I untacked her after the ride.

And no hassling by flies or errant driving school cars today, either!
 
Thanks for the useful update. I've ordered the Amigo Fly rider, but won't be able to try it out until my leg heals. I got kicked out hacking by a horse being plagued by horse flies. Won't stop other horses kicking out, but at least my poor horse will escape the pesky bites.
 
Just seen this after doing a search as been looking at the Gallop one today.

My poor horse is driven demented, so much that he is almost unrideable, and just by ordinary flies, not by horse flies. He seems super sensitive to them this year and any attempt to stop him constantly trying to get them off leads to jogging, bunny hops and fly bucks. I got off and walked him home after 20 minutes early today because he was just so distressed.

I will also have a look at the Barrier repellent.
 
I have to Amigo Flyrider and would recommend it moleskinsmum. It is not high viz but my horse was unrideable earlier this summer as he was getting so distressed with the flies but the flyrider has made a huge difference.
 
I have the Gallop one, and it seems pretty effective. However, a friend has one of the Bucas ride-on rugs with the fringing, and either that rug's a lot better or my horse is a lot more annoyed by flies! I'm planning sewing some fringing on to the Gallop one, to get best of both worlds.

Definitely second going up a size or two. She's a 6'3" in Big Horse Shop, a 6'6" in Amigo, and this is a 6'9" and a little snug around neck/shoulders.

(She'd normally have leg wraps on, too, but that hack took us through water up to her knees so I left them off.)
 
I have the Gallop hi viz one and am pleased. Def go up a size unless horse is very light framed. As we go out one with, and one without, the fly reducing effect is noticeable. Luckily the effect on traffic is shared! Mines done 16 months now and still respectable.
