As title, which colour do people think stands out best? Yellow, pink, orange or a mixture of two colours?

Also, I was looking to get a hi viz exercise sheet for my mare but as she doesn't get clipped I want something lightweight. Have seen the hi viz parsons rump.....does anyone have one? Pros and cons?

I personally think orange. In mixed lighting (like driving through woods), yellow seems to blend in with the strobing effect of the sun. Pink never really seems to stand out to me, but that's probably just me!

I tend to use a mixture of the three. It does depend on your surroundings and the time of year. Eg Autumn in the woods, orange isn't as good. My coat is pink but I wear a yellow tabard over the top, my hat silk is pink, horse wears a mixture of the three on legs, neck strap and stirrups. I've had people stop and ask where my coat is from as it is very bright. I've also had lorry drivers stop and say they spotted me over the hedges from my hat silk and that it was a good idea.

I've got two parsons rumps. They are useful for a hot horse as they won't overheat them. One of mine will slip round a bit, the other is perfect. I think the problem is my mare with the one that slips has quite a shiny rounded bottom and has a huge stride which makes her bottom wiggle and then it slips. The lady who makes them is very helpful though and will suggest things to help if you have a problem.

Yellow and orange for us. This is our 'nannying outfit'. Stands out on roads and against hedges. Probably visible from the moon. Perfect for such times when you're two abreast and the one nearest the middle of the road.

Pink never stands out for me. I did once spot a horse and rider long before I saw their hi-viz, purely because the rider had a white hat silk which was really obvious against the brown hedges.

I would say orange or a mix of colours... I tend to just wear yellow though as that's what I have - we wear lots of it though, and sometimes add in flashing lights lol

I go for yellow however as we have a lot of rape seed crops around my hacking routes I also have pink as orange and yellow can blend in a bit when they are in full flower.. I much prefer yellow though

Blaze orange, as Mike says, that's why construction workers, rail etc use it. Hunters also.

We always wear orange in the woods in hunting season, yellow and pink just don't show up as well.

I don't think orange hi vis is actually more visible than yellow. I looked into it a little bit to see why they used it on the railways and it seems to be partly because yellow is a signalling colour, and partly because yellow hi viz can blend into green backgrounds (fields) and there is the obvious issue of rape seed fields in summer too. Which is obviously an issue as so many train lines go through the countryside. So I think I think the background you're riding against is something that needs to be carefully considered. I've been noticing that I tend to see yellow sooner than any other colour on tarmac roads, but obviously it is winter atm so there is not a lot of greenery for hi vis to blend into. I think the best thing is almost certainly a mixture of yellow and orange.

I would suggest orange and yellow-green as these colours stand out and won’t blend into the background. But sometimes, it really does depend on the light, time of the year as well as the surroundings. You have to make careful research and consider a lot of things before you purchase. A close friend of mine opted for the yellow polo shirt from this Hi Vis London provider when he was working for a road project near McDermott Park. His duty was often during night time so he thought of buying a more striking colour with extra reflective strips which he found really useful at that time.

People definitely slow down more and earlier if I'm in orange than when I'm in yellow. Yellow is so common nowadays that people just don't seem to react like they do to a gert big orange thing appearing on the horizon.

Have never tried pink

Depends on the time of year. Orange is useless just now!

I got a parsons rump. It’s ok but I find it a bit of a faff tbh and haven’t used it much.

I think yellow is the best colour if you’re only buying one of something. I have a selection of different things for different times of the day / year.

ETA this is an ancient thread.
