Hi!
My son has started horse riding and with that I re discovered how much I love it too.

I gave up horse riding when I was 11 (I’m 41 now ?) and I always thought I was scared of riding. Always loved horses but thought I was terrified of riding. My last memory is sitting on a horse crying my eyes out and the instructor shouting at my mum “ she’s obviously terrified of riding! You can’t push your child to ride because you wish you could!” And that was that. Never rode a horse again. Completely forgot I ever had until my son was being shown how to hold reigns. It all flooded back! I used to make reigns at home and practice on the end of my sofa ?
Spoke to my mum and it turns out I had acute appendicitis and was in awful pain. I had emergency surgery shortly after. But all I remember is that instructor.
i shared a lesson with my son and omg I loved it so much! Problem is I’m disabled now so it’s hard. But yes my son loves it but we don’t know too much and I don’t have horsey ppl to ask for advice so thought I’d join and get some help and info. I want him to enjoy it for as long as he wants and it’s nice to have something to share.
sorry for my random intro!

Welcome I hope you find a way to really enjoy horses riding is great but the connection with the animals is better If your disability impairs your ability to ride then try driving it is a wonderful way to get a horse fix without having to have great balance and flexibility

So welcome aboard. I think maybe that was a good instructor. Kids shouldnt be pushed by parents (OK maybe this instance there were other factors) .How disabled is disabled when the horse is doing the work. I cant walk 20 metres without a break but I can do a novice dressage test very badly, much to BOB,S DISGUST. I sense a longing in you to also get back in the saddle. Dont just decide you cant and its not for you. I have met some truely inspiring disabled riders . Correction, Otherly able riders.

Thank you ?
Yes it gave me a freedom I do not have in day to day life!
my half hour lesson had me off my legs for 2 weeks tho ?I have ups and downs so sometimes in a wheelchair, mostly with a stick or I just stay in.
I do want to try again to see if there is anything I can change to save my legs but I have no idea how to ask or do it!
hearing you are able in a similar situation gives me hope tho. Any suggestions/ tips would be very appreciated! Thank you

Would I have to find a specialist school for this? To be honest I had never heard of the sport till they showed Prince Philip doing it in the news. Looks a lot fun!

To put it bluntly , I had a bad smash up cross country , ten years ago. It has been a long process of recovery . I grumble now about what I cant do but ten years ago I was totally F@@@@@ . You need to find the right people . (they are all on here) . My first dressage test after the accident ,I doubted whether I could do it without blacking out. Only a walk and trot test but a huge leap for someone with serious spinal nerve damage. . Managed it .enjoyed it ,and the camaraderie of the other riders . Recently progressed to novice . See my posts to realise my trepidation . But we managed it with some fantastic support from good old hho. So welcome to the sister/brotherhood

Hello and welcome to the forum!

There are quite a few on here who do driving - so if you have any questions about it, post them in The Tack Room - I am sure you will get a good response.

Hi, I hope you get to realise your dreams. I can't help, but I know driving is becoming increasingly popular, so there is help out there. .

Thank you for telling me your story. You have come a long way. I'm not sure I would be brave enough to ride again after that. But we push for what we love and what gives us joy.. Even if it is small. Our broken bodies like to take so much, its nice to tell it to bugger off! I'm glad I found this forum ? given me some hope and motivation.

Cornwall ?
My sister used to use her Highland mate in RDA lessons very close to Veryan, near Truro. I don't know if they still do it but may be worth a look. I will try to find the name of the riding school tomorrow. There is a place down by Penzance that reaches driving, with an indoor and outdoor school. Cornwall Swimming Horses. They do beach rides too!

The beach rides sound great! Penzance is the opposite end to me tho, I’m in liskeard. I’ll look at the one in Truro tho as my friend lives there and has the same as me. She gave up horse riding too so could be fun to do together… Penzance for a treat ?
Thank you
