Hi all. I have a big plan of moving from Australia to either England or Germany in 2028 to pursue showjumping. Problem is, I cant decide which country. I've always thought England, but Germany seems to have better opportunities, but I cant understand German accents. I am aiming for the 2032 Olympics as well, so this really is a career based decision and I can decide.
Thanks in advance,
Kelly Hannigan

Well it’s a long way off! No harm in starting to learn some German now 😉
I think it will be yard dependant rather than country and will depend how much experience you have managed to get in the junior circuits in Australia between now and then.

Haha, I like your sense of humour. Thanks for your perspective!

Since the UK left the EU there are additional costs involved in travelling horses to mainland Europe. There are also a lot more international competitions reachable on mainland Europe than the UK alone. Hence a European base may be better in some ways.

As regards the language issue perhaps include the Netherlands in your search for a base/stable. With few people outside of their country speaking Dutch you are more likely to find English spoken often there. (I lived there once for 6 months).

Also consider Belgium which is a mix of French and Flemish (a bit like Dutch) speaking areas.

Germany, Holland, Sweden are possibilities. They all speak excellent English. Make sure you're not just a skivvy on a yard though unless you are planning on bringing a couple of horses and paying to be there.
