I think these are called 'thumps' and are sometimes to do with an electrolyte inbalance. Before you rush off and buy stashes of electrolyte see if any one else agrees with me on this. :)

My pony has had them a few times, im not sure about the electrolyte inbalance, strangely enough he used to get them just before i would put his bridle. :D Just another way of delaying doing any work.

they were like being thumped, our foal got hiccups last year but they were like hiccups, these sort of made his head jerk forwards!! :(
Im not sure this time would be electrolytes because Im quite carefull to give him salt/electrolytes if he has worked hard or sweated. interesting though...
*goes to google it*

My mare often had hiccups and my Vet said that he'd never come across one before ! But he didnt think it was anything to be worried about and she was fighting fit !

I had my vet out to do Vaccs last week and asked her about it, she said she had never seen one get them before work before, during/after are related to elctrolytes as applecart said but before isnt.
she then went on to suggest they were pain related and having a full work up including BACK XRAYS?!!! yeah right!! who has that kind of money to spend for no reason?!! imagine going to your doctor and telling them you need a back xray because you got hiccups when you were tying your shoelaces!!! :p I politely said Il see if they get any worse or happen more often and left it at that
(FYI he has very recently had his back/teeth MOT and no problems, no pain and doesnt affect his work, just hiccups!)

A friend's mare has been doing this for years when being tacked up.

She has suffered from ill fitting saddles.

I had an episode where mty ISH had this - the vet said it was a "front of stomach" colic and could grumble on for ages if not treated, and then turn serious suddenly.

The usual Buscopan sorted it in a short time
