Does anyone elses horse hiccup?? my youngster does when hes excited or p**sed off when in the stable.

I didnt think this was even possible...thought he was ill the first time!!

Yes but not very often.
We found my horse did this when we first asked him to move laterally during an in hand course. The instructor hadn't seen the reaction before either. It seemed to be a stress reaction. He actually did it at the weekend when I asked him to move on and he was busy staring at the hedge.

When my foal was about a month old, I was sitting watching her suckle, after she was done she developed hiccups, proper noisy hiccups that came every 5 or 10 seconds. Her ears went out at right angles and she kept looking behind her to see where the noise was coming from.

Initally I thought it was funny but after 10 minutes or so I got worried (first foal I had bred so I was a stress head), I rang a dear friend who is a stud groom, who laughed and said it will pass - it did and it never happened in my presence again.

I think my youngster may have had hiccups tonight. Went to give them all their evening feeds - they are all out 24/7 - and noticed the youngster lookeda bit sweated up but he ate his tea perfectly normally.

He then seemed to make some odd noises - wasn't sure if a bit of choke but then he's had that before and you can see he's uncomfortable then.

We then thought maybe it was hiccups? From reading this and another coupe of threads it seems possible. Can't be sure why he was sweaty, was worried it was colic but he doesn't seem to be acting like he's in any discomfort at all and the sweat was dried round his ears plus I could hear his guts seem to be gurgling away (and he farted whish I believe is a good sign if they are a bit colicky!).

Still odd though - can only think he's either got a bit colicky and sweated up and then ended up with hiccups or he's just been hooning about shortly before our arrival. I have driven past twice since and he appears to be grazing normally with the others. Didn't want them to see me as wanted to see if he was acting normally and he was.

Why do horses have this tendency to worry us?!
