My elderly bitch is very skinny, she started refusing her biscuits and we had to relent and go back to the chicken and pasta/rice that we gave her when her colitis last flared up. She seems to have her appetite back and runs to her bowl every night but she doesn't seem to be putting weight on fast enough for my liking! Can anyone reccomend anything to feed her up a bit, it would need to be something that doesn't irritate her colitis so no dairy. I am not really fussed about what is and isn't good for her as realistically I don't think she will be with us for much longer. I am thinking of things to add to her chicken or feed as treats between meals!
Ideas?

Eggs, cooked or raw, sardines, cheese, plain cake, buttered toast, sweet biscuits all in moderation,I put a bit on top of our girl's diet food, rather like a garnish, seems to keep her happy.Have you tried Protixen? our girl has been so much better since we started to use it and has gone weeks with no flare ups,so hard when they are fussy eaters.Canned puppy food is also good, again in moderation.

Never thought of buttered toast, that is worth a try. She was not to keen on the omlette I gave her but I will try her on some scrambled egg tomorrow. She gets cheese to take her anti inflammatories with and she never gets bored of that (even though it isn't supposed to be good for dogs) and if we have left over grated cheese we put that on top of her food. She has always been lean so being elderly and not 100% has just tipped her over to skinny!

Popple loves a soft boiled egg, but some prefer scrambled or hard boiled. You can stir biscuits in with any form to try and get them to eat more.

I think tuna in sunflower oil is Pops' favourite! I give that to her when she's otherwise too excited to eat, such as shooting weekends, but she would also eat sardines with equal enthusiasm

Eeek I know but she loves cheese! To be honest she has been pretty good with the colitis recently and cheese doesn't really effect it. She does get tuna and sardines as an alternative to chicken (in fact I think it might have been you that suggested that last time for her). Are their any dog treats that you can buy that I could give her??? I have heard about kongs- do you think that would be worth a try?

The biscuits may be too hard for her teeth now. Check her mouth /teeth for problems, and maybe try soaking the biscuits in water for a few hours before feeding them. She might be able to cope with them then, otherwise try softer biscuits?

I sympathise with the decision to feed anything she'll eat, good or bad. Been there, done that.

Yes I agree about the biscuits being too hard for her. I have tried softening them but she grazes so they go rank when left for a while and then she understandably turns her nose up! I put a few biscuits in her bowl mixed with the pasta and chicken and she usually eats those.

That does look good puppy, is it very expensive? If I could get my hands on some, would it be ok to put these in with the chicken and pasta as I do with her normal biscuits, would that have any effect?? I just know that she won't eat them on her own, I have had samples from lots of better quality food and she just will not eat it, she would starve herself to death if you let her

Kongs are toys that you stuff with food, used more for greedy eaters to slow them down so don't think they would help with your girl. I don't know how it would affect her colitis but green tripe is good for putting weight on (smells disgusting though) or perhaps putting some oil on her food, again check re the colitis first. As others have said high protein puppy food may be okay, but just watch the protein as old dogs kidneys sometimes struggle with a high protein diet. Hope you find something that does the job, but wouldn't worry too much as long as she is happy, oldies do sometimes lose weight.

pasta and rice, we kept a dog going for years on those and a roast chicken every week! boiled eggs are good as treats. sardines in tomato sauce often go down well. cheap minced beef, either raw or baked into small meatballs.
i think i'd just be cooking more stuff for myself and giving her all the leftovers, i've never had a dog turn down "human food"...!
