I know most of you people are trying to get your ponies to lose weight, Well I'm trying to get mine to gain weight. Does anyone know of any high calorie/ fattening foods or treats ? I don't have much to spend so as cheap as possible. Also the pony I loan is a 39yr old welsh section D, I don't ride her but she is very active, trotting round the paddock ect. Would it be ok for me to take her in the sand panddock and trot her round in hand and pehaps take her over some poles. Honest advice please if you think that this would be too much let me know :-)

Unmollassed sugar beet is a cost effective way of helping weight gain. It needs to be soaked before feeding it though. Or soaked grass nuts may help, again they are relatively cheap. You would need to feed more than a treatsize amount for weight gain though.

As for the activity it all depends on the pony. If she is sound enough then why not. Just dont over do it, especially with the poles. You should also make sure she is wared up and cooled off properly and keep sessions hsort.

Yes. Lots of walking on a loose rein, changes of rein and big turns/circles. No tight turns or small circles. then same in trot.
