Hi - has anyone experienced a horse with a high respiration rate at rest. Allergies have been ruled out by endoscopic examination. Horse is also lethargic and depressed. Is eating ok though and is happy to see you. Bloods showed slight increase in white blood cells and slightly raised temp. Periods of high respiration are random but generally mid afternoon. Will be going to equine hospital in the next couple of weeks but would be good to know if anyone else has experienced this with their horse and what the outcome was. It has everyone very perplexed. Many thanks ?

Hi - she is currently under veterinary care and is being monitored - will be referred to the equine hospital tomorrow but it may be a few days before she is admitted.

Hope you get an answer soon, it’s horrible when they aren’t right but you don’t know why.
I did have a mare with a high resting resp rate, but hers was a very unusual problem that unfortunately had no cure.

Yes it turned out to be tumours on the bowel .
I would get a blood test done looking for acute and chronic inflammatory markers .
With hindsight after the event all my horses symptoms made sense, we found the tumours at the PM .
My horse was ill over three years getting gradually worse .
Is your horse grey ?

Hi - so sorry to hear about your horse ? but many thanks for your reply. I will mention the blood test to my vet when I talk to him today. Would you be able to let me know what the other symptoms were? My horse is black.

Had first he just would have a high respiratory rate and looked unhappy and a bit stressed.
He had bouts of colic at first mild and short lived but then worse and longer at times
He had had KS surgery At first we thought it was to do with that .
With him at times them found markers for acute inflammation never chronic so that That was a clue of course you understand things after the event .
He was grumpy to girth but of course we put that down to the memory of the KS
Apart from this he looked fantastic and worked well .
However if we fed him hay he got worse this was a big clue feeding haylege reduced How frequent and and severe the colic attacks where .
Feeding him wet bran several times a day also helped .
He had all sort of diagnostics and once the vet thought he saw something that might be a mass on ultrasound but they never replicated that .
In the end we where all exhausted he broke a rib once so violent was the pain but in minutes he could go from throwing himself about to fine .
I called it a day I had spent a fortune and I was worn out and he was getting worse they found the masses on PM .

OMG - that sounds like a terrible thing to deal with - thank you for sharing. We will be getting ultrasounds of lungs, gut and major organs done - so hopefully a step closer to getting this resolved!

Gosh, just when you think you have heard everything...

Our Cushing's pony has (long-standing) sweating issues which interfere with his cooling and he has a higher than 'necessary' resp. rate until he cools. Clip him and this disappears.

Hi - today she was bucking and jumping - all 4 feet off the ground! ?‍♀️ So I’m picking she was feeling a bit better. She is off to the Equine hospital on Monday - ultrasounds in the afternoon, staying overnight and more tests the next day. Many thanks for asking after her - will update you after she is back from hospital ?
