Hey guys, i have just been told by the vet that it is highly likely that my horse has high ringbone

It is my understanding that horses do not normally come sound again, is that correct? WHat is the best thing to do? Really upset

My first horse was diagnosed with this when I had him vetted for purchase as a 4 year old. I had him for 7 years and he was never lame even though it was very visable on the xrays! I thought once the ringbone had formed they could come sound. Might not be a bad as it sounds.

High non articular ringbone has a better prognosis than articular, as it does not affect the joint and in theory once it has settled down your hore should come sound (ish).

My horse has this in his off hind, he has had two steriod injections in two years, but now seems to have come sound, although he can be unlevel in canter.

He has had two months off in the two years since diagnosis, he hunts jumps etc, everything he did before.
I avoid hard ground (but always have) and limit my trotting roadwork. He is on devils claw and superflex.

The vet told me he would be able to do everything he had before, or nothing and would become a field ornament, although there are alot of choices with treatment.

I thought it was the end of the world when he was diagnosed, but it wasnt, and I still have my best boy!

So dont panic!

The horse I have on long term loan has this, he was an eventer and he is 8 this year. He has it in his off fore and he has Mobifor supplement every day. I have had him 6 months and he has been sound all the time with no lameness whatsoever, I have just been given the go-ahead by my vet to lunge him, obviously not that frequently and on as large a circle as possible but its positive. He will never event again but he can do more than hacking, obviously I am very careful about work on hard ground and I'm constantly monitoring his soundness, but he's in work and happy.
