Just spoken to the vet and it is very likely that my poor horse has high ringbone, i understand that horses do not normally become sound again.

Is this true? What is the best thing to do? Really upset

Hi AmyMay, vet didnt say over the phone - tbh i know very little about it and have been frantically looking it up ever since! She said that there are bony changes and that new bone is growing - i believe that is articular? She also said the prognosis was poor but they will qualdruple check with more tests tomorrow

Horses can be sound, but are usually stiff.

Try feeding something like cortaflex, synequin etc.

Regular gentle exercise is the key on soft ground to keep the joint flexible, allow extra warm up and cool down time and try to avoid riding on hard ground/roads as much as possible.

I have found magnotherapy products very very helpful on my horse.

If appropriate, maybe consider IRAP or Tildren therapy but speak to your vet.

I can understand how upsetting this diagnosis can be. Knocks you for six, but it can be managed and the horse can be ridden. Honestly, high ringbone is more of a bother than low ring bone, but can be managed and the horse still be ridden.

I hope the tests will be positive.

Thinking of you

Articular is bony changes involving the joint, and generally has a poorer prognosis than non articular, which is just bony changes affecting the pasten bone. Obviously it depend on the degree of changes and what else they are affecting.
I was lucky enogh to find my hores ringbone before it really had a chance to become a problem, he was lame, but even my vet could barely see it, I only noticed because he didnt feel right and had started stopping at fences.
Once the changes settle, if they do not affect the joint, the hore can become sound again. This is whats happened with my horse, I dont work him on concussive surface in case it causes the changes to flare up again, but he is much less stiff behind and still jumps, hunts etc.
