Does anyone else wimp out about riding/schooling in high winds? I live on the top of a hill and it has been fair blowing a gale for the past couple of days. I don't mind getting a good soaking or having frozen toes, but I just think its dangerous trying to ride when it is like this (there are branches blowing off trees and wheelie bins going across the yard!). To make matters worse, I picked up my new horse on Sunday and have yet to sit on her at home!

I had an accident on a horse in high wind, lost my confidence a bit so now i try and avoid going out in the wind on the horse, but i will go in the school when windy, just not keen on hacking

I dont ride at all if the wind is strong as its just an accident waiting to happen.I knew someone who was thrown off in an indoor school as the metal sheets on the roof rattle and gave the horse a fright.

I still ride but only in the menage! We have massive connifers (sp?) around the perimeter so they block most of the wind. I would never ride out in high winds as ive seen so many accidents in the past and ide rather not risk it!

it's not wimping out, just being safety concious - what if your horse leapt out in front of a car because of something flapping in the hedge....It's happened to me - luckily the car was already practically stationary

I still ride, and we are very high up for our county - but I am riding a Donkey!!!

Pleased its not just me then! In answer to HOPNSKIP my new horse is a 15.1 bay mare, ten years old, and she is TB x Cleveland Bay. I've bought her hopefully to do afflicted stressage on in the New Year.

I have to ride out every day, even if it is blowing a gale.Dont have such luxuries as a school!!Rode out today in high winds and rain, and cant say i really enjoyed it,but had no option!!

My daughter and her friend had a tree come down just behind them, just after they had passed it on their horses! It wasn't even a seriously windy day. The horses obviously reacted, but both riders stayed mounted. It could have been a lot worse.

Luckily our manage is surrounded by tree's so we can ride when there is high winds!

I also have to ride my mare everyday other wise she gets quite wild hehe!

but i tend to not hack/jump in winds.
then i dont think its safe.

I'm too scared to ride even when it's a little bit windy, though we're OK if competing, but not if hacking, even in company. Rosie and I do lots of lungeing! : )
