I am hoping to get a new saddle for Baron around Xmas time as his current one has a front riser under it temporeraly as it sits too low on his withers.

He has very high withers and a high spine. He is TBxID but is very TB like in his back and withers.

I am currently debating over having a new leather saddle fitted, getting a Thorowgood T6 High wither or getting a kieffer saddle off ebay (or from somewhere else) as these have very cut back heads and are fully adjustable by a saddler, then getting the saddler to fit it for me.

So what do you think? I am on a very limited budget so I am looking for the best and cheapest option. I need to get this sorted and obviously will spend as much as I need to but I dont want to go down the wrong route and end up wasting money. If anyone has any other options please feel free to add them

Or any makes of saddle that are likely to suit him.

Oh and forgot to add I am wanting a gp saddle, but as straight and long in the flap as possible as we mainly do dressage.

if he's lacking muscle behind/below the withers (typical in tbs) the best front riser trick i know, which might work as a temporary measure, and was shown to me by a saddler, is to take 1 or 2 squares of fybagee, fold them almost in half (to become staggered rectangles, 1 about 2" bigger than the other, so it makes a step), crease in half the other way, and line the crease up with the spine, and put under front of saddle over saddlepad. makes for a squishy, non-slip front riser which will give enough to allow horse's muscles to work and build up. added benefit is it costs about £3.

he does lack muscle there (below the withers) but after having him 18months he hasnt changed, I have done everything possible to improve this, so I am now happy to pay out for a new saddle as I know he wont change shape drastically. The wintec front riser works well but I want to get a new saddle in order to solve the problem compleatly. Thanks for the tip though.

i have just today got the t4 high wither saddle, will be riding in it tomorrow so will let you know how it is

He looks just like my last mare. I had a Thorowgood T4 High Wither and it was fantastic, really comfy for both of us. I used a Prolite wither pad with it for a while until she muscled up (she was rescued) which seemed to work really well, though I believe their front risers are also excellent. I loved that saddle! Definitely recommend it, they look smart and are obviously so easy to maintain.
