Just got back from Highclere having done day before dressage. Was absolutely incensed by the state of the arena it was impossible to ride in. Poor horse could hardly move let alone trot. It was a good foot deep in places and all sticky. if he did trot he was slowing down to walk half the time- it was a good foot deep of mud in there. Was impossible to do centre lines straight,, or do accurate circles, or ride into the corners as the mud was worse there and he was just floundering in it.

I'll be lucky if he hasnt pulled a tendon in that mud and if he had pulled a shoe off that would have been awful because his feet are so bad that a pulled shoe wouldve meant half his hoof wouldve come off. So it was dangerous to ride them in that sort of conditions.

They obv just plonked the arenas down on a bit of marshland and did not think about what they were doing. Im surprised that the dressage judge agreed to judge any horses on an arena like that. The pony club would NEVER have tolerated this. The judge was not in the least bit accomadating about her marking and wrote very rude things like horse not in balance..um hello?? how on earth do you expect him to be in balance when he is trying to wade through a foot deep of sticky mud??

There is absolutely NO excuse as there are 1000's of acres of perfectly dry land there.

On a good note the XC and SJ is fantastic. Beautifully built courses and good going. Really looking forward to that but just so upset about the dressage as horse warmed up the best ever and was going more beautifully then he has ever gone in his life. But so upset about today I could cry. Is this what we pay all this money for.

Awwwww no, had a friend there today doing day before dressage or should I say stressage by the sounds of it!

Best of luck for tomorrow

Thanks, the course is simply stunning and NO ditches or steps down!! Yay so just up Owens street! It is absolutely humoungous for a PN tho...but very straightforward..

What a shame about the dressage I could imagine those arenas being quite wet. Enjoy the jumping tomorrow anyway they are lovely courses so have fun.

Did anyone complain to the organisers? It sounds terrible, what a waste of your money....hope the jumping goes well tomorrow

I did vent off at the poor steward straight after the dressage but he just said nothing and looked blankly at me. I guess that the guy was just a volunteer and could do nothing about it.
Went to sec's tent afterwards and did talk to an official looking lady and she just said that a) I was unlucky to be near the end of the class and b) the dressage judge should have taken the ground conditions into consideration when marking the test . Rubbish.

Being day before dressage with the main comp starting tomorrow there was no rider rep about. Am going to hunt him down tomorrow!!

Thanks Finn I think that is a good idea I will definately do that.

One important thing I forgot to add, Owen didnt feel quite right when we came out of that arena.Nothing major just a teeny bit sore. Just praying that he hasnt pulled something. Will just have to see what he's like tomorrow.

the showjumping and xc LOOK ok now but nothing has been on them has it bet the showjumping not looking so good by monday and i expectthey will sort out their arenas by monday anyway because the great and famous will appear with their advanced horse!! couldnt have them dipping their little toes in a bog!

I tend to write to anywhere I have a grievance about, a nice polite letter asking if in future things could improve..
Of course we all understand how much time money and effort goes into running an event, but then we also put in loads of money, time and effort and our hearts into our performances too. (well CCj does, I used to!)
To have a dressage arena in that state at a BE event is not acceptable. It must have been possible to quickly move them sideways or backwards, even judges get lunch breaks when it could be done.
I would definitely write to the organisers and BE, and next time go and find the Rider Rep, that's what they are there for.

Agree with HH a polite letter explaining your grievance would not go amiss. A few years ago one event I went to had pretty bad dressage arenas and warm up. Warm up was on set aside ground with long raggy grass, arenas were on an area normally strip grazed by diary cows so short grass and cow pats everywhere. Lots of riders, myself included, politely complained and the next year the event layout was changed. Definitely worth writing.

I was equally unimpressed - left the arena with steam coming out of my ears. My mare was unlevel afterwards, but lucky was sound today so I think she must just have knocked herself.

I agree, it was horrific, I have never ridden in anything quite so bad - by the time I went they were not even making you ride up the centre line anymore. And you can bet your life the great and the good will not be riding in that tomorrow. What I did not understand was why as the warm up was so good the arena was not there?!

I was gutted, I finally managed to warm the horse up properly, got him straight, light and listening, then lost him completely as it was all he could do to keep going in that. All my sheet said was 'on the forehand' and 'not going forwards' - I wonder why on earth that was?!!
