I often joke that my mare is so laid back I should put her on racing cubes.. so it got me thinking. What is the highest energy food for a horse, what do some of you avoid as it blows their heads and what do others use simply to get them going? I know it's perhaps not as cut and dry as that but in general, what would you term the highest energy?

I think the highest DE is maize..... it's not usually recomended to be fed as a straight, due to it's extream heating powers!
I'd try adding some oats to the usual ration, if you want a bit of sparkle. This is what I do, then if I think he's getting bit much, I just stop feeding the oats for a few days.

We are feeding Spillers Response Instant Energy mix, it makes the laid back pony 'normal', but even a small amount makes our other pony loopy, despite being on competition mix last year over the summer. Trial and error I think, what livens up one may not liven up another.

Oats are high in energy but not very fattening so good if you need just energy and not weight gain. Probably the best feed to boost energy.

Maize is higher in energy but high in stach so is fattening and should really only be fed to a horse in hard work.

With compound feeds the Baileys competition mix has highly digestable quick release energy and is about the only mix they do which does provide quick release energy. Racehorse cubes are actually designed for those prone to excitement and provide a slower release energy but promote stamina. I think with a horse in light/moderate work it is likely just to make them fat tbh. The racehorse mix also contains non heating energy.

My horse has to have a bucket of oats every day or he just can't perform to the level I require!!!!

Quite interested in the maize think I might try a bucket or too of them a day!!!

Spillers instant Response mix has made a difference to my horse, I use it together with Pavo mix "moulonge rouge"!! (nick name for the mix!)

Thank you.. I have tried oats, make no difference! Although they were whole oats, so maybe crushed would be better. Somebody suggested barley rings but haven't tried them yet. Currently on Baileys No17 Conditioning mix which is recommended for competing too..

Well it might not be whole buckets a day, just seems like it! He really doesn't go as well though without them.
