Highland Ponies

Thanks for all the replies!!! Photos are fab!!

I've found a few I like the look at but going to have to take a trip up to Scotland I think

There is a 13.3hh i'm interested in but not sure if too small but I understand they ride quite big?? I'm 5ft 2. He has however just turned 4 and within my budget so would be able to start breaking him in.

13.3hh will be plenty big enough for you, and at 4 he's probably got at least another 2-3 years of growing to do anyhow. I ride a 13.1hh and I'm 5'7" (admittedly, I think I'd quite like a very slightly bigger one when I can afford it, but I've had H since I was 9/10; so it's not entirely surprising that I've got a little tall for him now I'm an adult).

They really do ride bigger than they are, and it's very easy to over-horse yourself if you aren't careful, because they're strong as anything (again, using H as an example, he weighs 500kg when he's fit, which is... quite a lot for a 13.1hh pony, when it comes down to it - and it's not like he's particularly naughty, but if he wants to go one way, that's probably the way we're going).

Great! I will have to update you all once i've been to see him. Would post some photos but not sure if that'd be okay as he's not actually mine!

Have made a trip up to Scotland this weekend. Seen one yearling yesterday who is lush and seeing 2 more today :-)

Dykes Hill stud in Yorkshire is wonderful if you get the chance to visit! Absolutely gorgeous ponies, with the most gentle characters. They're mostly on the smaller side- 13.2ish to 14hh at the most, but as others have said, they really feel like a lot more horse once you're on! Good luck with finding a pony. :)

Lots of advice about getting a pony but please be aware that Highland ponies speak Gaelic so it is cruel to have one on it's on. You need at least three so if one is taken out for a hack, the two who stay at home can talk to each other.....

I have to second this if you end up on the lookout for more - it's where we bought Mr H from (well, technically we got him from the trekking centre, because he was rising 9 at the time), and I've never met a Dykes Hill pony I didn't like.

I only got a couple of pictures. Wish I would have got more. He's lush! 2 year old gelding. He'll be staying up with a friend in Scotland until May when he will be making his way down. Just wish I could get him now!! Not sure how I upload pictures will have a go.

funny you say that....my highland boy surprised me tonight when I said 'i'll take your bridle off now' and he walked over the stable to me and put his head down ready for me to take it off! Didn't realise he could understand English (although to be fair, he was born in Yorkshire!) ...will have to be careful what I say from now on!!
