I trim my highland ponies tail, not extremely short but enough so that when it gets wet and mucky and he goes into marsh it doesn't rap around his hind legs. Is this bad to do? I don't show him or anything but should I be doing something other than taking scissors to his tail?

If he still has enough to whisk flies away that sounds fine :-)

Anything else likely more hassle for you/more uncomfy for horse.

Just feather cut it or on the slant. I do mine too a little and I do show. Mine has read the same book as yours and goes bog snorkelling too....

I've a foal that does this for me.

Hoping the Cribox will do the trick. His mum's tail use to slightly drag on the ground, too.

That's three generations of foals from the same mare, all with the same habit. At least, this year, we were ready for it!

I just feather cut it, in spring it was uber short because he got lami and was in a diet field which he made into a bog, NOT KIDDING! Now its grown alot and has to be trimmed if need be, how often do you trim it?
