My smallest oldest terrier is Hilda, she is at the youngest 11 but we don’t really know as she came to me as a re home 8 years ago with a rough guess that she was 3yo. She has cataracts, bad teeth and has been slowing down for the last few months. Friday she had a funny turn in the night and the vet things it’s a heart issue. We are off to see our normal vet tomorrow. She pants constantly and doesn’t really breathe like the others apart from when asleep. She was sick in the night last night and only eats if I hand feed her, this morning she didn’t even want that so I gave her half a chicken breast. She tries to keep up with Margo, Luna and Elvis but really struggles afterwards. I think it’s time to let her go, but am I wrong? Thanks

Of course you aren't wrong. There may well be something the vet can do for her but it's absolutely up to you if you decide to treat her symptoms or let her go before they are too bad (or spend £ to find out what the issue is). I had my terrier PTS even before her scheduled heart scan because I knew what her future would probably look like and she wasn't the sort of dog to grow old gracefully. Her heart rate was all over the place and she had pancreatitis, which was probably the cause. I'm all for treating things if their QOL is normal, but I strongly believe they shouldn't have to suffer just because we don't want them to leave us.

I hope you get some clarity tomorrow.
