I am interested in Hillgarth ponies for showjumping? I have heard alot about them and i really like the look of them.does anyone know much about them?
if anyone has one for sale also please contact me!

Hi,

Are u looking for something unbroken or broken and on the circuit ? Breeder tends to have a large selection of foals for sale at weaning advertised around now, he also keeps some 2 and 3 year olds. I have a yearling who will be shown when broken. They're quite feisty and insure u get one that's been well handled. They do well on the Bsja circuit (can find on you tube if u search hillgarth) they are also a few with BE records and BD records so are pretty versatile, they tend to be the more modern stamp so leaner and more athletic that said my boys quite chunky. Haven't seen any advertised for sale that are broken so can't help on that front.

They can vary as they use a few different stallions, but echo RFS. They breed modern, sporty types usually. They are nice enough ponies, but arent any different to any number of other welsh section Ds you can get, so I'd look for a welshie that suits rather than get hung up on a Hillgarth one :)

ah right, thank you. yeh i know what you mean, just really like how fiesty they are as i like a challenge haha! thanks for your help x

I find that they breed a lot, and though you might get the odd gem, I've not met one yet- the ones I know are all slightly more neurotic than usual with D's (I have a D, not a hillgarth) and it's a bit of a lucky dip with them... But if you're buying soley for BSJA, why get hung up on a Welsh at all? There are plenty on the market with proven records that aren't D's, and you're limiting your field hugely. Personally, I'd rarely step past a TB X Connie for scope, sense and speed.

Totally agree I have heard of many that are neurotic. Thankfully mine is very level headed for a one year old and well mannered that said he's had an awful lot of work done to get him to this point; when he came home just weaned he was a wreck who wouldn't let people near him couldn't walk on a lead rope had I not nipped this behaviour in the bud within the first few weeks he could be completely different. He now leads, catches and loads and will be left to be a baby with just general handling. Whether he's a gem will be revealed in 3 years 🙈 Personally unless u are wanted a D for a specific reason just look for something with a good Bsja record or good potential as katastrophy says

And conversely mine was the sanest and safest horse I've ever met. There was nothing feisty about her. If you want a show jumper, buy a show jumper dont limit yourself to one stud and one breed :)

Hillgarth Majestic is for sale on Horsequest ref 151208

I follow his owner on instagram and they are a lovely pair
