Hillgarth Welsh Ponies?

Has anyone got a pony from Hillgarth Stud (they breed welsh section C's and D) If so what are your experiences with them? :confused: Just wodering because I have two and never again. If anyone is thinking about getting one I wouldnt they are pratically wild about 60 mares in fields with foals and left untill 6 month old, when we got ours he was terrified of humans. You can message me too if you dont want to go "public" :)
 
I have one , 9yr old sec D

I bought him last yer as a project and he was pretty wired but has turned into the most gorgeous pony with a bit of sympathetic handling

I would have another one in a heartbeat but they are def not for a novice as they seem to be bred sharp and showy ;)
 
Have backed a couple, both lovely ponies, very intelligent and keen learners, but not for a novice :) Wouldn't hesitate to take on another.
 
Someone on my fb has one, up for sale as a project. She sent it for professional breaking but has since bucked her off several times, she broke her ribs in one occasion. Has to sedate to shoe and hates being groomed. I don't have any first hand experience of it though and it's very pretty.
 
I have a 10 year old D mare who is a brood mare because she is as quirky as they come, such as shame because she is every bit HOYS quality and moves better than most stallions I have ever come across and has won 3 silver medals in hand, but you cant touch her mouth and she doesnt particularly like her head being touched, she has had one previous owner since been 6 month old and ive had her about a year and half, her previous owner was a lovely lovely lady who loved her very much and tried to break her numerous times, even sending her to a professional producer who returned her saying she was a danger. She is not bothered about anyone sat on her, she just wont accept a bit or anything near her head. One day she is kind and affectionate and the next she is a cow and you cant catch her. She is built like a bull and just to scan her it took almost 3 hours for the vet to get a sedation in her and the same to have her teeth done! Twitching her is not an option as she would stove your head in! I have just accepted thats how she is but OMG she throws MEGA foals!

And do the foals have the same temperament?? As I just would NOT breed from a mare like this. What's the point of 'pretty and wow movement' if you can't handle her and can't ride her?

I never said I couldn't handle her, I said she is quirky about certain things and temperamental! She could be ridden bitless but I dont see the point in this when I am a show rider! Her now 3 year old filly was broken by a novice and been ridden by a novice and her current filly foal at foot is the frindliest and quietest of any of this years foals!

I breed for type and temperament, I dont breed crap that no one wants!

i have an 11yo that came from their stud clearance sale after being used as a tease and brood mare, i affectionately call her 'headcase havana' as she is a bit of a eijit sometimes, she is fab on the ground once she has been caught apart from having her feet picked up and her tail touched, she has all sorts of issues ridden, wont stand for you to mount, hates other horses coming up behind her or near her, is hopeless in traffic one day then brave as a lion the next, the list goes on lol
yet there is another hillgarth D on my yard who is as safe as houses
 
I know 3 or 4 and to be honest they are stunning ponies with looks to die for.....but most of them are as mad as a box of frogs..I know of 2 that are ridden and are very talented but extremely quirky.I know of 6 or 7 that cant be ridden or driven because of their temprement .They sell quite cheaply up here because of this and so get into the wrong hands and the problems get worse.
 
Hi, I know late reaction but new to the forum. I own a 11 year old hillgarth sec d. Bought 2 years ago. Was only lightly backed as she was so difficult. Gave had tonnes of problems with her but we are now doing great in showing and dressage novice level ( most of the time) but she is very very quirky and difficult to hack out, most surely a adults ride.
Funny I never knew it was typical hillgarth welsh........ :confused:

more of a typical section D than one particular studs IMO Hilgarth have some super ponies.


I love the Welshes for their attitude and character. Yes some can be as safe as houses but on the whole they are sharp.
Bit of a marmite breed the Ds and not everyone gets on with them :)
 
I have been around horses all my life, mostly TB who are a real bag of issues! but recently I have been working with welsh sec d ponies breaking and riding. Even though I have large TB horses 16.1 upwards, riding theses little bundle of fun welsh ponies is amazing. I have been converted!

If you want temprement, good jumpers/show offs and all round great hardy ponies than get a sec d! a 14.2 rides at least a hand bigger!

never thought I would be! but last night prime example, TB are now starting to be rugged up, welsh sec D's could'nt give a stuff!

The crazy thing is the breeder I ride for has stock for sale but no one wants to buy, they want warm bloods or TB for hunting/show jumping, these are pocket rockets, go all day and jump anything even electric fences!!!! and thats just the foals!
 
I have 3 Hillgarth horses, a chestnut mare who I have owned for 10years and has been the best decision I ever made. I also have her sister who is 11months old and a 3 yo bay section D, both of which I bought last Summer.
I would not hesitate to go back and buy more, yes there are a lot of horses at the stud but they are all well looked after, all of mine have incredible temperaments and haven't been the slightest bit of bother. Highly recommended!!
