Himalayan (Sp?) salt licks.

Sorry, they do my head in:(

Why dig lumps out of the Himalayas ,(actually Pakistan) transport it half way around the world, when you can get perfectly good lumps of salt from Cheshire in the UK?

Also, the pretty pink colour is from iron oxide ( that's rust in other words!) and most UK forage has plenty of iron anyway.

Sorry, rant over.

eta, agricultural feed stores sell small sacks with 4 or 5 large lumps of plain rock salt for a few quid. Not prettily coloured or fancy shaped, just as it comes. Nothing added, nothing taken away as they say:)

Okay, just checking! Mine seem to love it!

Cragrat, I got mine from scats, and was only 5 pounds for a big lump of it, so probably the stuff you are on about? :)

Cragrat whereabouts can you buy blocks of Cheshire salt? I've looked online and can only find Cheshire salt sold in granulated form because it seems to be just produced for the de-icing market.
Also the only agricultural merchant near me is Countrywide and the only salt block they sell is the Himalayan one. I'd love to be able to buy British/local salt licks but I can't find anywhere that sells them!

Interesting. I must be the only one whose horses don't like them. No horse on my land has ever shown any interest in Himalayan salt licks. Strangely I've noticed the only animal interested in them are pigeons! My horses do like standard Rockies licks though.

Mine like them, but my shetland goes nuts for them. I bought her one (quite a small size as I wasn't sure if she would like it) and she literally finished it in under a week, even ate less hay so she could spend more time on the lick. So of course, she drank A LOT more water and peed A LOT more. Can they have too much salt like humans can? Seeing the speed she went through it I'm wary of getting her another, could she be really lacking in something?

I gave them up because of the iron. I now put granular de-icing salt (pure white stuff) in a bucket attached to the wall and they eat that.

Bit off topic but I bought one once with the strangest date stamp ever.....don't know if they still have them but it was along the lines of .....pure rock salt,2 million years old, use within 12 months !

Be very careful when buying road salt, as some is not pure but has other chemicals, presumably these should be avoided. My boy wont lick salt blocks, he does not like salt!
I just add a teaspoon of pure salt I got from Screwfix, it was on offer and lasted two years!

Mine love them.

AS for why take it out of the Himalayas.

Why take anything out of other countries and export them round the world the salt there has different properties than the UK.
Benefits of Himalayan Salt include the remineralisation of the body with over 80 minerals and trace elements essential to health. It also helps to balance the body's pH levels, and can lead to significant positive changes to respiratory, circulatory and nervous system functions amongst others.

Its also brought in health food shops too - if you ever taste the salt blocks you buy here they are eeeky so salt make you screw your nose up but the Himalayan blocks are very mild which is prob why horses love it.

Hmm, the benefits of Himalayan coming from their website/packaging I would guess? If you break down any lick you'll get a whole plethora of amazing benefits - it's all in the marketing!

I try to avoid feeding my lot anything containing iron, they don't need any more of it. They, and I, like Rockies, but of course that's personal choice.

Hahaha! I never checked mine, off to scats later, I'll have another look!
