Anyone had a horse with the above that has had any of the newer therapies like stem cell etc done on it? Vet says shockwave would be of no use. I am only interested in a better end repair than trying to speed recovery up

Hi, my mare has had a tear in her front DDFT, realise that its not a hind one but thought my experience may help. Shes had wedge shoes and box rest and is now turned out after 6 months of in hand and ridden work. This was the only treatment shes had as the tear was too deep within her hoof. She does seem to be recovering well, am not counting my chickens as its still early days and we have done lots of walking, now just bringing trot work into the equation.

Hi I have had experience with cold compression therapy providing stronger healing as it encourages more efficient nutrient delivery to the area whilst minimising the damage caused by swelling. Have a look at gamereadyequine.com. I have a system myself so if you have any questions feel free to PM me. My love for the machine comes from it being an effective way to encourage good strong healing while being drug free and non-invasive.

There has been a lot of success with intense cold treatment such as Glycol followed by LW ultrasound through the region, helps to create a better end repair as encourages correct fibre alignment. A qualified Veterinary Physiotherapist should be able to help you with this if your vet thinks it is ok. Peter Milner at Leahurst has had some very good results with this form of therapy post tendon injury

Thanks guys..Nelson can you tell me what glycol cold treatment involves and how/where one could get this done.I am Worcestershire based...and forgive my ignorance... LW means what in relation to ultrasound?

My horse has the injury you describe, it's a 4cm tear just above the fetlock in his case, he has been on box rest with a support bandage since November, he was also cold booted twice daily.

The scans/x-rays carried out my vet showed nothing significant but he wasn't improving and was I felt in obvious discomfort so he was referred to Rossdales in February at my request.

Rossdales performed an operation to cut his annular ligament in February to release swelling and tidied up the site of the tear. Since then he has had two IRAP injections.

However I have been told due to the size and sight of the injury he will never be 100% sound (he is one tenth lame in trot in a straight line and two tenths lame on a circle) and is likely to be a light hack at most.

On sunday he was finally allowed to go out in a 15m x 15m pen for the first time in months. :)

I do feel if his injury had been picked up and treated correctly when it happened I might be looking at a more positive outcome now.
