Hi

My horse was diagnosed with hind gut inflammation in september, she has been treated initially with succeed and dengie healthy tummy which did very little. I added in equi-jewel and a balancer and for 5 weeks she was back fighting fit. However last weekend (19th December) she started to feel not so good and now she is back to square one. I spoke to a clever phsyiologist/biologist type person who recommeded I take her off everything except the balancer and to start her on a gut balancer, this i have done and started it last tuesday with very little change so far.

She started to get worse again with increased work which is the only change so i'm thinking maybe she has a musculoskeletal pain that is causing her discomfort in her gut to flare up. I have got Rob Jackson the back vet coming out on the 18th January to see what he says.

Has anyone come out the other side of this problem with their horse? I am desperate to get her back to eventing which she used to love. Or at the very least able to do lower level jumping/dressage/hacking so she can have fun with someone.

thanks

Yes, mine is fighting fit a year and 2 months after diagnosis. I have to manage him carefully and he is on Equishure from Saracen which isnt cheap but has made a huge differece. Initially I had to strip his diet back and limit grass intake as the grass does seem to cause an issue, once we had him stabilised we have been able to introduce 24/7 turnout again over summer. I cannot stop the Equishure without him becoming uncomfortable, he also has negative reactions to alfalfa, which is in healthy tummy I think, unmollassed sugar beet and Copra. EquiJewel made him girthy.
He is managed now on Keyflow feeds - Pink Mash, KeyPlus and Meastro - Equishure, Boswellia (its known to reduce bowel inflamation in humans) and an Equivita balancer with Mycosorb and Yea saac. The Equishure and the addition of the Keyflow feeds made the biggest difference. He's had a recent flare up after a course of anti biotics and bute but we just continued as we were and it settled again. I add protexin when chaging fields/grazing. Mine was actually well enough to do our first event this summer after over 3 years on unexplanable illness.
Do you know whats caused the inflamation - Equishure treats hind gut acidosis which, according to my vets, is a common reason for inflammation and does require the PH level to be restored for it to get better, it's not likely to sort itself out.

Thanks for that. I have heard good things about equishure. Was hoping to avoid it though as just can't afford it long term! How much do you feed of it? Going to try her on agrobs soon, just waiting to see what the clever guy says. Was thinking of cutting out the alfalfa too. I think she has had this problem for a very long time. I've owned her for 2 years and after she had the 5 weeks feeling well she felt better than she ever has.

Equishure is expensive, yes, but honestly my horse is finally the horse we always hoped he'd be. I can't quite explain the difference in him. He's a big TB and we did a week on 120g, a couple of weeks on 90g and he's been on 60g a day ever since. I buy the 7.2kg tubs and they last me 4 months so it's £32.50 a month effectively which isnt a huge amount at all.
If you decide to do it if definitley recommend getting rid of the alfalfa and just feed something simple. Agrobs grass nuts or the mash might be a good place to start.
