Am looking into hind gut supplements.
Horse (8 yr old TB, raced at 3, turned away after racing till 5, with me since then) currently on 6 week treatment of omeprazole following scoping - she has grades 1-3 ulcers including pyloric ulcers which the vet warned me can be harder/ take longer to treat.
We discussed a hind gut supplement and vet agreed would be a good thing but advised to wait till after re-scoping in order that we can determine better what treatment/ supplement is helping the most.
I've noticed a certain amount of improvement in demeanour and ridden work after 4 weeks on omeprazole (2 more weeks, then re-scope) but it's by no means been a miracle cure. She is still somewhat girthy, irritable for rugging, generally swishy-tailed when ridden. Also a slight right hind toe drag (definitely not a lameness, she has recently had full referral work up and treatment for UFP and been given the all clear). Saddles are professionally fitted very recently, teeth up to date, physio regularly etc. Horse is managed as sympathetically as possible, ad lib forage, low starch hi fibre bucket feeds, small fibre feed given before exercise etc etc.
So am now researching hind gut/ general gastric supplements but the mind boggles at the vast array available.
Have read good things about Equishure and Ritetrack, and have had a glowing word-of-mouth recommendation of Equine Science Gastroplus which I hadn't heard of before. I used Succeed for a previous horse but there were so many other issues going on I found it impossible to judge if it helped.
Anybody used any of the above, or any others? Any feedback gratefully received to help me decide which one to try first!!
