Hind Gut Ulcers

Our recently purchased gelding has been diagnosed with hind gut ulcers and has been put on a course of Succeed. Has anyone experienced this and if so how long did it take to correct itself and were there any lasting problems. I had to ask the vet to test for this since he scanned for stomach ulcers which were not evident and he then wanted to proceed down the muscular/skeletal route.

Make sure his diet is cereal and grain free, what a difference it made to our ex racer. Top spec feed is really good and changed his behaviour in space of a week. He is not on any supplements anymore either.
 
I have one who recovered and all mine get a low sugar and cereal diet anyway (he developed them when he went on loan and had a long journey/new surroundings/new routine). It does pay to never let them get an empty stoamch and minimise stress as well, so living out all year round with ad lib hay can make a lot of difference as to whether they recur.
 
It's all about maintaining the horses hind gut environment in the long term so diet changes may be needed and attention to horses environment and any stress triggers. Some owners feed pre and probiotics before showing/travelling etc.

Mine had gastric ulcers diagnosed by scope years ago. GastroGuard worked wonders but there was still always an ongoing problem with his guts & recurring flare ups despite diet & management. Succeed did nothing for him in my opinion - I saw no improvement when he was on it & no change for the worse when I took him off it.

Recently we were having problems again following box rest for an unrelated problem. A friend mentioned a product called Equishure sold by Saracen. Rather sceptical, but desperate enough to try, I spoke to them & decided to give it a go - the difference was rapid & huge! Within days he lost his tight tucked in look, his droppings were more normal & his appetite was improved. Even his cribbing has lessened! I hadn't expected much, but even if I had I'd have been impressed. Now I'd never had hind gut ulcers diagnosed but he's been on a lot of gut support for years now trying to control his problems with limited success, possibly because none of them (except Succeed) were targeted at his hind gut the way this is. If the Succeed doesn't work for you I'd strongly suggest giving this a try.
