Hi
I was reading in last weeks H&H in W F-P column about special hind jumping boots that help the horses action over a fence. Apparently they are used in the BYEH classes. Does anyone know what these are? I've never heard of them or am I just out of the loop??
Thanks

Someone was talking about them the other day - Zara P using them too - think they are made by NEW - not sure how they are supposed to work though

I didn't read the article, but I assume it's the new 'pressure' boots. They basically are done up in a way that adds pressure to the hind legs, which should result in the horse being more aware of his legs and therefore picking them up higher over fences. They work in the same way as weighted boots but are less obvious!! Still, I have seen both used, sometimes they work sometimes they dont'. If used regularly they can make a horse lazy in front or I have heard of some horses that panic, particularly through combinations.

I think they have their place on a careless horse, but some people think you can turn a non-jumper into one wearing them, and TBH you can't!! I think eventers favour them as thye are usually more careless than pure SJ'rs.

They are weighted boots I believe...never tried them myself, but then i've never had a horse that takes poles out behind

I think someone else on here said Toytown uses them though

I used to use weighted boots on my old horse but that was for more medicinal purposes to help build up his back end after injury

I'm so glad you asked - I wondered about that too.

Doesn't seem fair that they should be used at BYEH (but then expecting valuable 4 year olds to jump reasonably large fences without any back boots doesn't seem fair either).

Thanks everyone, glad I wasnt the only one wondering! They dont sound very fair to me though, for either the horses or the other competitors.

From what I gather they aren't allowed in Ireland but are perfectly legal (for now!) in the UK. The weighted boots have been used for years and years but recently major boot manufacturers seem to have caught on and I would not be surprised that now it is a topical subject, the use of them is looked at more closely by BSJA etc....

Doda (I think) boots, have inserts to press in on the leg encouraging elevation and are quite heavy, although I don't think the weight has any effect...I know where you can get them if anybody is interested....

I recently asked about these
here

I think they should be banned in young horses classes as thing its tantamount to cheating. They are trying to improve the horses style which is marked in BYEH. Its a different matter in SJ classes as style is not being judged.

Actually, in some of the young horse classes for SJ'ing they are marking on style and performance too

I agree that they are artificially enhancing a horses performance in the ring. Don't see the problem with training the horse in them though

or these by new equine are the same:

NEW EQUINE WEAR CARBON LEATHER EXTENDER BOOT
Noticeably improves the jumping action of a horse by helping to extend the hind quarters. Constructed from real leather with a finish giving enhanced abrasion resistance, tear resistance and tensile strength, together with the look of carbon fibre. Developed with Di Lampard, Britains No.1 lady show jumper. Ideal for slightly lazy or older horses suffering from stiffness.

Slightly off-topic, but when was Di Lampard last Britain's No.1 lady showjumper

She's currently ranked 51st, and there are at least half a dozen ladies ranked above her

Hmmm...I gather they are similar to weighted boots perhaps...or they may be trying to act on the subcutaneous reflex action to try and improve pick up although that is not proven to work for long periods of time...doubt they would make it to the first fence without the effect wearing off.

REALLY can't see how a pair of boots can extend the hind quarters...

I thought Ellen Whitaker was the British leading lady??

She is according to the current rankings list

I agree, marsden - the alternative to having these boots on the market is rapping and it will carry on. Rapping seems to be a huge taboo but at the same time, acceptable practice in many circles.

Just like to say I have NEVER rapped my horse and I've had her 5 years and had to endure the constant disappointment of a good jumper marred by recurrent 4 fault-itis. Usually it is caused by a lazy back back foot (not always the same one). So, if these boots were not avaliable maybe I would be inclined to resort to rapping. I haven't bought any boots yet but am certainly thinking about it for next season.

Maybe boots are the lesser of two evils?

I watched one of the 1.60 m classes at a big show in the summer and noticed that nearly all the horses cleared the fences with a double 'flick' of the hind feet. I'd really love to know why so many top SJers do this...??!

Probably because the people riding them have identified this trait as being particularly desireable in a top SJ'er
