Taking my little sheltie who weighs around 10kg to have her hind leg amputated tomorrow, just curiuos as to how much this is likely to cost, i don,t require it to be x-rayed as the leg was badly broken and fixed with pins 2 years ago [ £3000 ] and it was made clear that if it broke again fixing was'nt an option . Somehow something has happened not sure what she has done to it , no one in the house is aware of any incident but pretty obvious it has broke down , She will be so much happier without the leg just wish i had taken the amputation option when it was offered the first time , anyone one else got a tri-pod dog ?

Yes , we try to do the ' right thing' , but wish we had hindsight , removing the leg 2 years ago seemed very drastic but we have tiptoed around her eversince trying to make sure she did'nt get damaged, got 3 other bigger dogs that play with each other and she has'nt been allowed to join in , poor girly .

I don't understand why your dogs have had problems with their operations.
Admittedly it was about 30 year ago but I had two whippets who broke legs at different times. One a front leg, the other a hind. They went to Mr Clayton-Jones at Tenterden who did a wonderful job & they both lived a normal life afterwards. Ran around madly & everything. I never even thought about treating them any differently.
In fact my local Vet thought he could mend the second whippet's hind leg but found there was more to it when he opened it up. The bitch wasn't putting it to the ground after op, when she should have been, so had to go for second op with Mr C-J & then had stress fracture in other leg due to too much strain on it from poor op. Should have gone to Mr C-J straight off.
Perhaps anyone else who has a dog with a broken leg needs to look for a Vet who specialises in breaks not just use their usual one. It's like doctors, your local Vet is just like a GP, if you need something specialised you find a Consultant who deals with the problem. I learnt my lesson.

Actually the vet who pinned the leg is a specialist whom our usual vet refered us to, the leg was broken across the bone and also down the bone, she is only tiny and has fine bones , he worked wonders to mend the leg but the external fixature had to be removed early as infection was beginning to take hold and eat into the bone around the pinholes .
