hind limb lameness

after feeling quite positive about lilys prognosis after the massage therapist came out, we’re back to square one. the vet came out today, positive flexion test response for both hind legs but mainly the left, and point blank refusing to let her anywhere near it, but let me pick it up and then “pass” it over to the vet.

we’ve got 2 weeks on bute before they come back out to see her, and in the meantime i’ll be putting my claim in for the insurance to have a full lameness workup. typically, despite telling me she passed the vetting over the phone the certificate states potential exclusions for insurance because he didn’t see her canter ridden, yet on the phone said to me he’s passed her and believes it is just down to inexperience, since she’d done virtually nothing since being backed which i explained to them prior to the vetting. my fault for not waiting for the certificate before buying and insuring her, but they want a copy of the vetting to put the claim in - they just didn’t ask for one when i actually insured her.

2+ weeks of having no idea what the problem is is going to be absolute torture, let alone not knowing if she’ll ever be able to do the job i bought her to do.

understandably devastated, and not remotely the outcome i imagined less than 2 months after buying my first horse.

Suspensory ligaments, hocks tendons … the list goes on, are you sure it couldnt be related to that kick she got? Its all connected 😣

it’s the opposite leg that the vet believes is the issue, and the vet didn’t seem to think there was anything more to the kick - with the placement and there being no blood or lameness afterwards it seems unlikely:(

Agree with Stangs, try not to get too worried, although I do appreciate that is much easier said than done. There's still a good chance it could be something that's not important and easily fixed.

Before you let yourself get too worried, has she mud fever or thrush? Wouldn't be the first time that a horse has gone lame from a hoof issue that the vet didn't pick up on.

thankyou both, i appreciate the intent! definitely not mud fever, we’ve no grass turnout at the minute as they’ve well and truly churned up the little we had so she’s been in the school for a few hours a day (i appreciate this is less than ideal, i don’t love it either!)

i pick her feet out daily and i’ve not seen or smelt anything but i’ll have a more thorough poke and prod (and whiff🤢) tomorrow - is it possible for it to be mild enough to not be glaringly obvious but still make her noticeably lame? the farrier is actually out in a week or so anyway.

also noticed today, she’s tracking up in walk/trot but the left hind, the one that seems to be more painful, seems to come up and to the outside. so the hoofprints are level with the front, but slightly off to the left. any bright ideas people?😂

You're a really good owner, I hope everything works out okay 🤍

thankyou, that means a lot🫶🏻 my friend actually asked me today if i’m going to sell her if she can’t be ridden, baffles me because that hasn’t once crossed my mind, i’d pts before i rehome as a “companion” to be passed around or worse, sold on as a ridden horse for a profit:( i’ve read far too many horror stories for that!

I find companions have far less respect than ridden. Its so sad, I really do appreciate your dedication and I hope everything works out for you, horse ownership is such a journey I have my fingers crossrd for you! How old is she?

she’s 10, was in a field virtually untouched until 7 when she was bought by the girl i bought her from and backed, then did virtually nothing since:( green as grass so i’m hoping her career won’t be over before it’s even started!

Was the horse vetted by Roman Villar?
He's got a reputation for doing this and has formal complaints made on him.

she wasn’t no, had to dig out the certificate because i couldn’t remember haha. what he’s actually written on the report is quite positive, and he’s said that in his opinion it’s just inexperience, no pain to SI when palpated etc.

i did have bloods taken, so whilst i don’t suspect the seller has lied/missold her i could have them tested for bute etc. i suppose you can never trust someone selling you a horse can you🤦🏼‍♀️

I was going to say (not sure if you know them personally) but they could’ve lied about why she wasn’t doing much work? Such as she goes lame when in work?
