Went to ride Arthur last night and he wasnt right in trot.

Got off had a look around, spotted lumps on the top of his shannon bone (inside) instantly thought splint. Gave him a quick lunge to check, and see the lameness myself.

about 14 days ago we went XC, then 2 days after went to the yorkshire show for the week (leaving arthur and co being looked after by my auntie..... in the field)

so all my horses have had a week off.

so untill now i have only just seen this lump that has appeared.

Hes not really lame just not using his leg and would call it more of an unsoundness than lameness. Hes just not right.

i left him in last night, and today. got him out this morning and put some anti inflamatory gel on.
I hace bute if requied.

There isnt really any swelling at all (put the gel on to be safe! lol)
the lump is about 1" from the top of his shannon bone, and about 1 1/2" long, the lower part of teh lump is harder than the top bit. He dosnt mind if i touch, and there isnt really any heat to say its "hot"

do u think he is just getting over his hind splint?? thats my thoughts.

i havnt had a horse with a splint for years n years! so mind has gone blank, think my pony went lame for about 1 week with his???
should i box rest him?
turnout?
work gently? (when lameness has gone)
give him a week/s/month off?

bandage? (although his leg seems to be taking it great?)

any info will be great.

they say with a splint to cold hose for 20mins twice a day until the heat/inflamation/lameness has gone, this can take a week or so, and rest (as in turnout, with no riding) for about 6 weeks to give the splint time to settle and harden, then carry on as normal.

obvsiously play it by ear as to how long the splint has already been there and how much your horse is feeling it.

I personally wouldn't use bute unless he is in significant discomfort (hopping round his field). and if that was the case I would be calling the vet.

Thanks,

like i said hes not really lame so im not worrying that much,

so cold hosing and some rest untill he comes 100% sound, little bit more rest to be certain then get him back into work.

if you want a good cosmetic result bute, box rest and bandaging are all good for a few days then dmso helps

My boy had splint 6 weeks ago.Vet told me to rest 6 weeks he went out in restricted turnout for 3 weeks with cold hosing and I used danilon to reduce inflammation( 4 per day 3 weeks the 1 per day 2 weeks) .We didnt bandage my tb gets sores which are worse than the damage.I also used cool gel. This was all on vets recommendation.
